Evening entertainment... What's everyone doing?

AmyandRoss, 15 April, 2014 at 12:52 Posted on Planning 0 15

Do most people stick with either a band or DJ?

I was thinking of doing something a little different and hiring a comedian for a bit of stand up and a DJ.

Is a live band a must have?

I really wanted a band because me and oh are really into live music but it's a summer wedding and guests may mill around outside or just spend time in other rooms so there's no point if no one is going to be there to watch them, with a dj it doesn't matter if people filter in and out.

I don't think anything is a 'must have'.

We've not finalised what were doing yet, OH is thinking of asking a friend who is a singer to do something, but if we don't we will probably just have a dj, but we are having a magician from after the ceremony through the wedding breakfast we anted something the families could enjoy while kids are there.

I think it's up to you and a stand upsounds like a great way to start the evening off

We are having a DJ! - I like the idea of a live band, but i didn't want the same style of music playing all night. We considered having a band followed by a DJ to allow for different music styles but it was just going to cost so much! So in the end we agreed on a DJ and just made sure that he had an extensive playlist! x

We are having a DJ. We did consider a live band too but our budget didn't stretch to that and after talking to a Wedding DJ friend of the OH's he said at weddings people tend to listen to bands but dance more to DJ's (we aren't using him so he wasn't being biased to try and get us to have him!) so we decided on a DJ only. We do however have a photobooth for 3 hours to give people something else to do and add another element to the evening.

But like people have said nothing is a must have. It's all about personal preference and budget at the end of the day.

    Good luck!

Also the only other thing I would say is although the comedian is a great idea my only concern with having that would be everyone's attention would be on him. No-one would be chatting to each other while his doing his thing. Weddings fly by so quickly anyway so do you really want to cut down on your time talking to your friends and family? I guess it depends on the size of your wedding and when your dinner finishes. If you have lots of time between the eating and the evening dancing then he would be a good filler...if not I would say stick with a DJ so you can mingle more.

We hired a guitarist. Very low key, allowing people to mingle or dance. I like the idea of someone walking around as the guests mingle with the reception drinks taking requests and doing little mini sing alongs.

After we eat and do some of the traditional stuff he will play a couple of sets, fully backed up with modern technology and his voice and guitar.

That's the idea anyway! Will let you know how it turns out!

We're having my good friends uncles Band. Saw them at my friends wedding and thought they were great and a bargain at £500 (mates rates). We are also having 2 friends both music teachers singing at some point in the night as a wedding gift to us.

We haven't bothered with a DJ as the band will let us link up a playlist through there system. Just need to decide who is playing when and for how long.

    Any ideas?

Band is very pop/indie based and female singers are more chilled pop etc.

Our wedding reception is evening only, wedding abroad 2 weeks previous so want a more party feel. Will also have a diy sweet table, cupcake table (bridesmaid loves making cake and will do at cost) and DIY photo booth including England props as it is England's first match of the world cup.

We are choosing to incorporate the match into the end of the evening as 1. OH wouldn't miss it and 2. We are both PE teachers so suits us.

    Gosh I've rambled on.

We havent thought too much about it yet, but we would prefer a band and then just wire up some playlists via the laptop in place of a DJ. We are toying with the idea of having a poker table as well (loads of our guests love poker).

We've gone for a band who will either sort out a dj for in between their sets or they'll plug up an iPod playlist. Think we're gonna go for the Inbetween DJ in case there's any requests!
