evening reception problem

sapphire_22, 18 January, 2011 at 23:31 Posted on Planning 0 8

I just realised that since we aren't having a dj (wedding singer, followed by a band) there won't be any special lighting when people are dancing in the evening - is this a problem? I'm finding it hard to visualise it but I imagine that there would only be an on/off light switch in the room, which might be a bit weird. I thought about maybe dotting some led tealights around the room to add some light...or am I going completely crazy? What do you think?

Well they can't really because they are coming from abroad (my OH is desperate to have them) so they will be flying over.

There is the option of hiring in lighting. Most DJ shops do dry hire of equipment such as lighting. I know of most of the DJ shops round the country so may be able to point you at one. The cost of a tripod with some pars and a couple of disco lights shouldn't be too expensive. Also a few DJs are happy to hire out just lighting.

We're hiring lighting and DJ separately. It's quite normal to hire the lighting on it's own if you have a band. I would ask the company who is providing all the speakers and equipment if they also do lighting.

A couple of these might add interest...

Thanks for all your replies.I think I'm going to have to track down someone who does lighting then because the venue are supplying the speakers. I'm going to have a long talk with the venue soon anyway since I'm getting a bit confused about the things they do/don't provide.

These are totally useless as an 'effects' light.

Hire form a local DJ or disco equipment shop.

Your venue might be able to source some lights for you.

Check out the 'speakers' provided by the venue - they maybe OK for background music or speeches but.... ask to have a cd played loudly.

We hired a juke from SM Jukeboxes (www.jukeboxhire.co.uk) and they also supplied lighting packages. They'll also tailor a set for you if the packages they've got aren't quite what you had in mind. We were chuffed to bits with what they supplied us with.

Hi Babybee12... how did you find the sound from the jukebox, did you need to hire any extra PA/speakers? am looking at using these guys and will have a high-ceilinged room which will about 80. Smiley smile
