Is there a MAC counter near you? I'd make an appointment for a makeover and get some products while you're there - the cost of the makeover is redeemable against purchases so basically free, and I've always found them to be lovely - helpful and non-pushy. They do a great waterproof kohl eyeliner which I love as I've never got the hang of the liquid ones.

I agree with Sophie - MAC are fab and the staff are really helpful.

What colour are your eyes? Are you fair or dark haired? Are you daring or boring? ?

Definitely get a kohl eyeliner, it goes on easier. MAC is a good make but TBH if you just want to have a play around, Rimmel do good ones.

Estee Lauder do a lovely propelling pencil thing which is easy to use and avoids the need for a sharpener (which I always lose and end up buying new liners when the other are blunt ?)

Pippin, do you wear any other makeup at all? (It's not obvious from your post whether you do or not). If not, remember that you need to 'balance' makeup - if you just have eyeliner, it'll look a bid odd and unfinished, particularly if you don't use mascara and groom your brows.

If you're a bit of a makeup newbie I'd second (third?) the recommendation for a MAC makeover - they'll take into account what kind of look you're after, how competent you are with makeup, and how comfortable you feel wearing a little or a lot.

I've got Rimmel and MAC eyeliners, both fab. I generally use a liquid eyeliner above (probably not a good idea for eyeliner virgins, not easy to get right) and then underneath I actually use a dark brown eyeshadow rather than a pencil, put on with a very thin, angled brush, as it gives a very subtle, soft line and it easy to build up to the look you want.

I've now got 3 MAC eyeliners. They are fab. My fave of the moment is a grey one called Industry.

In fact you've just reminded me of a Q.

Flailing wildly i do wear make up and have just bought bad gal lash ( was recommended by a hitcher) and some new eyeshadow but the eyeliner is the only thing i have never got into. I wear nude lipgloss so want my eyes to stand out.

I like GOSH eyliner they do at Superdrug - such lovely bright colours. I tend to use the pencils as they go on easily and stay on well. They do a liquid liner, but its harder to put on and it stays on so well I can never get it off!

I love the Clinique quickliner - lovely andsoft so goes on nicely, automatic pencil (no sharpener needed) and has a smudgey thing on the other end.

I really like mac but i've found their makeovers tend to be a bit on the heavy side - especially where eyeliner's concerned. if you've got a bit of time to practise, i'd try a liquid liner with a very thin brush (chanel do one) but it takes a steady hand to get it right. then layer up the eyeshadow with something dark near the lashes to blend into the liner slightly or it can look a bit stark.
