Facebook - I'm a bit freaked out, can anyone help?

Flaming Nora, 9 July, 2009 at 11:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I've logged on to my usual emails today to find 4 friends requests from Facebook. I've clicked the link and it takes me directly to my profile which has my name, date of birth and email address. Underneath is a list of friends they suggest I add. Included in the list are my sisters, mother, several friends, friends partners (some of whom I barely know) and about 5 randoms.

The odd thing is...........I have never, ever registered myself on Facebook. WTF is going on? I am spooked.

It might be that someone has asked to add you by email, or it could be a phishing email.... Not sure either way. Are your mum and sisters on Facebook?

Yes, all of the suggested friends/family on the list are all on Facebook.

Is there not a bit on Facebook that says "The easiest way to search for friends is via your contacts list" (i.e. e-mail address book)

Perhaps one of them has clicked this so it's sent an e-mail to everyone in their address book?

But Smint., when I clicked it I had a profile. My details are all on Facebook.

Does it automatically create a profile when someone invites you? How would they have my date of birth etc?

If you have never added yourself, but it goes to your profle, it sounds like someone has added you.

Surely if it's suggesting people for you to add, you would have had to enter a password to log into the site?

Veh strange! hope you get to the bottom of it

Ok, when I navigated away from the page and back again, it had logged me out. As I don't know the password I counldn't get back in so I've requested a new password and then managed to deactivate the account.

Hopefully that'll be end of it. Very odd.

    Thanks for the suggestions ?

You can put someone's birthday in the Contacts information (in Outlook, anyway) which is why I thought it might have picked it up from there

I don't know whether it would automatically set up an account (sounds a bit odd, but I suppose it's possible), but the Contacts link was the only way I could think of that would gather that info and send you the e-mail without you having joined Facebook
