Facebook - is it normal to have people you don't know ask to be friends ?

The White Rabbit, 4 March, 2009 at 10:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Admittedly am very bad with names but not totally sure I know the two people who have popped up (have only been signed up for a fortnight) - can you accept and then look at their profile to check you know them and can you delete them later ? Or can you just ignore the request and hope you haven't offended anyone you shouldn't have ?

Wish there was a 'um thanks for this but can you remind me where I might have met you ?' response

You can add them and then delete them if you find out you don't actually know them, at the bottom of their profile it says "remove as friend" or something like that.

If you ignore them they don't know anyway, so you could still do that ?

Yes, I'm definitely getting more randoms - there's not the faintest hint, either from their profile or their friends, that I actually know them.

With very few exceptions, if I don't recognise the name immediately or there isn't a covering note explaining who they are, they don't get friended.

The overwhelming majority of my Facebook friends are people I know in real life - and that includes the vast majority of Hitchers. (As for ones I haven't met, I can usually spot them because they'll invariably have JK as a mutual friend, so I just ask her who they are!)

Thanks - just seems vvv wierd that you'd ask someone who you didn't know - I put a photo on so its not like they are confusing me with someone with the same name surely

Is whole new minefield for me to navigate ! That said am very much liking it (surprised actually thought it'd be a waste of time !)

If you click on their names you should be able to see their profiles (though it may only be a limited amount) this might help to jog your memory a bit. Alternatively you send them a message and simply ask them to remind you where they know you from? or you can accept the request, have a mooch around their profile and decide whether to keep or remove them (to remove them go to the bottom of their page and you will see on the left hand side 'remove friend' just click on this, a box will probably pop up to check if you want to do this or not.

I get seemingly random people sending me requests too, quite often they turn out to be people I was at school with who have got married hence why i don't recognise their name!

Unless they look dodgy from the outset I normally ask "Do I Know You?"

My ex has just found me on FB................not sure if to reply ☹️

I ignore all the random requests, but I know people who have ended up dating via a Facebook hook-up, so if you're looking for luuurve (or friendship for that matter) I guess it's worth saying yes, and deleting them later if you find you're not interested.

What I'd like to know is, if I delete one of my existing friends, do they get a message saying "You are no longer a friend of Sofianna's" or is the process silent? Does anyone know? I've not deleted anyone yet, but I'd like to get rid of some of my old colleagues. ?

If you delete someone off your friends list facebook doesnt tell them that you've done it. However if your privacy settings are set to just friends then they might figure out what you've done if they realise they can do longer see your profile. Hope that makes sense

Nope as far as i know you can merrily delete away without the deletees being notified.

That depends. Mine used it to ask why I didnt sleep with him and when I told him why, he asked me out for a drink. Even though we are both married with kids ?

Urgh I get loads of random requests. i have a double-barrelled surname, both names on their own are fairly unusual and I get loads of requests from people who just happen to share one of the surnames (not related to me). i never add them but ex Mr Dief does (but then he adds people he's waved to once across the street!). I also get requests from people (mostly men) who 'like the look of me' (my profile can be seen by friends only but anyone can see my picture).

If I have no mutual friends in common, I ignore.
