Fantasy travel itinerary

Pop Up Pundit, 14 April, 2008 at 19:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

So, sitting on the bus in a fug this morning with dozens of other wet commuters, I started thinking seriously about whether I want to take a little sabbatical later this year. I can in theory take a four month unpaid "career break" from work. 2007 was shite, 2008 hasn't been much better, my divorce should come through in October/November - what better time to take a really great trip?

What would your fantasy itinerary be? Where would you go?

I am thinking (and have no idea yet if this is possible) something like New York*> San Francisco> South America somewhere, maybe Costa Rica> Fiji, Vanuatu or Cook Islands> NZ*> Oz*> Singapore*> Vietnam> Thailand> South Africa > Home. Starred destinations have friends and family in them, so definitely form part of the trip. I've done a fair bit of solo travelling, but not this long on the road. It's too many destinations already isn't it? ?

Will there be people my age doing the travelling thing or will it all be smirking hard bodied 19 year olds with daddy's credit card and no idea?

Can't help with itinerary, but I can reassure you re 19 yr old rich kids.

4 of my mates have been travelling in recent years, all in mid 20s using money saveds from first jobs after uni. A couple I know in their early-mid 30s have spent about 6 months teaching English in Costa Rica, and really loved it.

Life is for living - go for it.

We're planning do the same as soon as we can get enough money together (28 & 30 so definitely not hard bodied 19 year olds!). We've did part of our ideal itinerary last year (honeymoon) which gave us the bug I think. We went to Malaysia staying in Kuala Lumpar, Langkawi and Borneo - couldn't recommend it more. Would also love to visit South America (especially the Galapagos), including walking the Inca Trail and going to Machu Pichu (sp?) Would also like to go to China and India... I could go on ?

Ooh, I thought this had dropped off the board...

LS - I'm mid-thirties rather than mid-twenties. But you are right that it's for living and it shouldn't make a difference.

BB - I have the money, the only thing that's stopping me is the strange inability to just go & make it happen!

Get yourself to Trailfinders or similar and start going through some ideas - they'll be able to offer advice and ideas and who knows, you might even book it ?

I would love to tour the States and go to New Zealand.

I also would recommend Trailfinders. We have used them for our holiday this year and they sorted everything out according to our quite specific demands!

I spent a month in South America in October and it was fabulous. If you could find your way to Santiago in Chile, you could fly from there to Easter Island (which is just magical) then fly onto Tahiti.

I covered La Paz, Tiawanaku, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Macchu Pichu (which is simply stunning), Lima, Santiago, Easter Island, and finally Buenos Aires (although isn't a classically beautiful city, it has great atmosphere).

    Oh, and I'm not a hard bodied 19-year-old! ?

Go for it PUP. You deserve to do something for you ?

Friends of ours did it for their 6 month honeymoon, early thirties, and met many like-minded people along the way.

Hmmm, if I did it, I'd concentrate on SE Asia I think. I've got very itchy feet at the moment, think it is the time of year! Spring and new beginnings and all that...

We are currently saving up so we can travel.I am 35,h is 30 and i have a 15 year old daughter. We will go when she leaves school next year even if it is just for 2-3 months.

We are planning on a tour of Usa & Canada, then eventually doing the far east but i reckon my daughter will not be interested in that.

My cousin has just been travelling for 14 months, from Canada (where he lives),australia, new zealand,Hawaii,Bali,Thailand,Egypt,London,Bolton(to visit me) New York then back home to Canada. He is 26 and has worked most places he has travelled to.

My H says you can go pretty much anywhere you like on a round the world ticket, it just needs a bit of work so you could do the route you've got planned.

I haven't been to Costa Rica, was a bit pricey when I was on a very low budget jaunt round central america, but it's supposed to be lovely if a bit US-centric. Southern Mexico and Guatemala though are fab. If I had the money I would definitely head to the Galapagos - was a serious contender for the honeymoon but we didn't fancy bunk beds ?

H has been sending peeps to Easter Island, you can do that as a return trip from Santiago Chile on a BA Quantas one world explorer 6 continents ticket (apparently!)

If you're on your own you might fancy a short tour in some of the places you visit. companies like imaginative traveller are reputedly very good, H has sent 50 year olds on this sort of trip before so it's certainly not all post A-level gap year kids

    Go for it!
