FAO - my raffle prize winners (photoshoots)

ooh la la, 28 May, 2010 at 09:45 Posted on Planning 0 32

Hello ladies,

I really don't know how to word this or what to say. I am absolutely distraught and beside myself. Last night OH and I went out to celebrate the end of his school placement. When we got home, our lights were on - I knew immediately, as I'm very OCD about lights being off and doors being shut. We've been burgled - our back door has been kicked in, our kitchen cupboards have been ripped of their hinges, there is stuff strewn everywhere, our bed is ripped apart and all over the bedroom, our drawers have been thrown and tipped everywhere, every drawer, door, cupboard has been opened and it's contents thrown everywhere.

Our cats have only just come home, one is petrified and wont be stroked, all my camera equipment is gone and OH's laptop has been taken (luckily a mate was borrowing mine for the night.) I feel awful as I now am going to have to cancel your sessions as I don't know what will happen insurance-wise. I feel so, so bad. I'm so sorry. I promise if/when I get a new camera, I will book you all in again.

All the jewellery left to me by my late Nain is no where to be seen - stuff that can never be replaced.

I feel completely violated.

sorry this isn't more eloquent, I'm completely beside myself.

You poor thing. It's horrid isn't it? I hope that the insurance people are ok to deal with - when my m&d got burgled they were really quick to get back and get replacement vouchers. It does ease in time, and your home will feel like your's again. x

Thanks for all the lovely messages.

The SOC has been and dusted everything for prints - she found a trainer print on the door panel, but said it's highly unlikely to come to anything, because they'll dispose of their shoes straight away. Also, he wore gloves, as she couldn't get a fingerprint off anything.

Basically, there is no evidence, very little chance of us getting our stuff back and the people will probably never be caught.

I'm scared in the house and I'm terrified of going out.

As an aside, does anyone know if insurance companies have any views on cat flaps? The door they kicked in had a cat flap in it and we were told by the Police that having a cat flap makes the panel weaker and therefore easier to kick in. We're petrified our insurance will be void.

So sorry to hear this. I know how you feel because it happened to us about 15 years ago. Police couldn't get any prints from our house either so no-one was ever caught. It is true that cat flaps do make the panels weaker so may be worth checking your policy. Don't feel terrified about going out because this means they've won, b*****ds. We do lots of things now that we wouldn't have dreamt of doing before we were burgled such as having timers on the lights, leaving lights on in rooms upstairs and down when we go out, leaving a radio playing in the kitchen, leaving cups out near the kettle so it all gives the impression we are in rather than out. Even now, if I see cars parked with people in for any length of time outside our house that I don't recognise, I take down the reg no. just in case.

I really feel for you. OH's parents were burgled last week while they were away for a few days. All the usual things were taken (laptops, TVs etc.), but his mum lost all her jewellery too, including items she was given on her 21st birthday (she's in her 60s now) and her wedding ring. We just feel awful that there's nothing we can do to help. They've both just retired after working so hard all their lives, it makes me really sad ☹️

Ahh gawd, that's awful. I hope your police team is as on the ball as ours....

    I have an amazing update!.....

.....My camera and gear has been found, so has Rob's ipod! Literally, a couple of minutes ago, a police officer came over and showed me the bits he's recovered, but I can't have them back until the court hearing which could be in a couple of months.

The knobheads had taken them into Cash Converters, where they were caught red handed!

After the SOC lady had gone and we started tidying, I found the jewellery I had been given - they hadn't even touched it, just tossed it out the box.

All other bits - Macbook etc haven't been recovered, so I'm gutted for Rob as that was the main thing we/I was hoping we'd get back.

Best bit is that the twunts had taken a photo of a "bag of white powder" and a rolled up £20 on my camera! The focus was spot on, even a little bit of coke bokeh! Thank you so much everyone for all your kind messages, they mean so much to us. xx

Sheesh, glad you got the camera 'back'. I gather your photos are dated and they cant pin you down for taking pics of coke?! keeping my fingers Xd for the macbook return. By the sound of it they wont even know how to turn it on! So, they been nicked then???

Was just about to post how sorry I was when you updated. Obviously I am still sorry to hear what happened to you both, but I am also pleased that they managed to recover some of your items. Obviously that doesn't stop you feeling volated, and knowing that someone has invaded your space. Hope you are ok ?

Thanks lovelies, feeling a lot happier now, still distraught about the burglary and livid about how much they'd trashed the house, but so, so pleased that they caught the bastwards! And so quickly!

We phoned 999 at 11:14, the photo is logged on the camera as being taken at 11:20 - I was blatantly heard wailing like a banshee in the background, whilst Rob was talking to the operator, so I think we're covered on that one! lol.

Apparently the macbook will be long gone as they're so easy to pass on. It was in a lovely Manhattan Portage bag too, which I bought Rob for his birthday last year. He's gutted bless him. Plus his Ipod has been wiped.

This is great news! The police working on OH's parents' case have been really good. Thieving gits stole OH's brother's cash card and then promptly used it in MacDonalds and Morrisons, so this should help to track the idiots down! x

I know it's not on the same scale but I had a convertible and someone slashed the roof, got in and trashed it. Once it was sorted, I couldn't get back into it for ages. I felt violated and sick at the thought that someone had been in there so can only imagine how you must be feeling. The feeling will pass though, and thieves very very very rarely go back to the same place twice xx

    Have some more hugs ?

Really sorry to hear whats happened.

I work in insurance and although i dont know the ins and outs of policies, i cant see it making a difference whether you do or do not have a cat flap. I deal with things like this on a day to day basis and whether or not your claim is covered is dependant on quite a few things. Your insurance will probably ask for a copy of the police report as well.

You know we're always hear if you need a rant or chat

This must have been awful for you, I hope you're ok. I'm really glad that so much of your stuff has been recovered so quickly though, that is great news.

I completely understand how you feel, it is such a horrible feeling to know that someone has been through all your things like that. Two complete twunts broke into my parent's house when I was 17, while I was in it - horrible horrible, and it took me a long time to feel safe in or out of the house. I hope you can shake the feeling off as soon as possible, don't let them win.

Thank you all so much for your lovely messages.

My partner and I have been looking on Right Move all morning as we are going to have to move. We were planning on moving in a year or two anyways, but the events on Thursday night have made us come to the decision that we need to move now. I just don't feel safe here.

We own this house, but are planning on selling and renting for a year until I finish the PGCE, (will be earning) and then both our names can go on a mortgage.

Peter - thank you so much for your offer. I have had many offers from Flickr friends so I am hoping I'll be able to borrow another Nikon (found two lenses after SOC let me tidy the house so can still use these) from one of them for the shoots. Thank you so much though Smiley smile
