pink1908, 15 June, 2011 at 18:11 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hey fellow Brides

I was just wondering what your order of the evening reception consists of? My dad has just asked if we can do a dance together and not sure what order to put things in.... Our evening guests arrive at 7:30pm well at least that is what we put on the invites! Do i do my dance with hubby first or my dad!!??

Our evening guests arrive at 8, will be greeting them all etc for half hour to an hour then cutting the cake, doing our first dance then straight after dancing with my dad. Hopefull after that people will all get up dancing and then the waiters will start bringing round the bacon and sausage butties/ cones of fish n chips about half 9!

I think traditionally, the bride and groom have the first dance, and then the bride dances with her dad...although I'm not sure, this is just something I've picked up from Four Weddings...

Ours is a little different to the usual arrangements but part of that is because we aren't able to invite everyone to the wedding breakfast due to cost issues.

We're having a welcome line at 5.30pm, with the speeches starting at 6pm. At 7.15pm we will have the cake cutting, then at 7.30pm the barn dance begins with our first dance, which we are working with the band on practising but basically it's a couples dance, so we'll do a few turns together for photos then we'll be dragging up my mum and her dad so we'll dance as two couples, then we'll drag up my dad and her mum to dance with us, then my two stepparents (my parents are both remarried), then the best man and chief bridesmaids, then usher/bridesmaid, usher/bridesmaid, flower girl/ring bearer, finally our two readers, and then open the dance floor up to everyone for the next dance.

Buffet comes out at 8.30pm when the band take a short break, then they'll continue till about 10.30pm when we'll go back to background music playing.

As many of our guests are travelling some distance, we fully expect there to be not many people still around by 11pm which to be honest suits us fine as neither of us are night owls or fancy chugging gallons of Mountain Dew to keep us going all evening (particularly as it seems that taking my, by then, new wife to the loo is a precision military operation requiring several people and lots of coordination) and non residents need to vacate by midnight as per our hotel's normal policy.

I believe normally the first dance is husband and wife, and if you're having a father/daughter dance it comes after that as a 'second dance' if you like - maybe your new husband can dance with your mum or something at that point too?

    Our order of the evening is;

    - Have a drink

    - Dance

    - Have another drink

    - Dance more

    - Have more drinks

    - Just one more drink then

    - Eat something.. soak up the alcohol

    - Have more alcohol

    - Dance!

I have no idea what the tradition is with the dancing, but I'm sure you would dance with hubby first.

We are going to do our first dance first and then do the father daughter dance after that.

For the father daughter dance we are going to play Unforgettable by Nat King Cole because my Dad used to sing it to me at night when he tucked me in. This will be a surprise for him too.

TBH i hadnt even thought of doing one as didnt think my dad would be up for it so was really happy when he asked me, if if its 2 months before the wedding! I just hope the band know what ever it is he decides upon...

What does everyone think of... Having the first dance when band starts and then father daughter to start off 2nd set? or should it be after first dance with hubby?

I am dancing with my dad first as we are having the song Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman as it is about a father giving his daughter away to her prince charming, then my dad is going to give me to my fiance and we are dancing to Take That- Rule the world.
