Cupcakebex, 23 February, 2013 at 15:11 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi ladies,

what are your opinion on favours? A nice touch? Waste of money ?

I don't know whether to bother or not, seen some pretty options but comes in approx £100

why are you all doing?

thanks! X

I wasn't going to bother with favours, table plan or name cards but as I've completed all the planning incredibly early and have some money left over I thought that I would. I've bought some circular organza bags in 4 different colours that go with the colour scheme (any old blue will do lol) and am going to the local chocolate shop to get some flower and heart bits to put in them. I'm thinking that it's now a nice touch ?

I'd never even heard of favours till I started wedding planning and if I had my way we wouldnt have any.

However I will probably have a box with a navy, white and silver chocolate heart inside for all the day guests. Or maybe those personalised chocolates with the name and date on it.

I went to a wedding recently and there were lots of favours left behind at the end of the night so I wouldn't spend too much.

I'm not too fussed there being given a 3 course meal drinks and a huge buffet, so if anyone says anything then there going to get poked in the eye lol.

They are a nice touch and you have so much choice now. We've only got 25 people at our wedding so I'm doing small jam jars with homemade biscuits, then having names on tags to work as place names. I know my Grandad will just open his straight away and eat them there!

The weddings I've been to have only done favours for the people at the wedding breakfast so you have less for costs and less wastage.

    I like favours Smiley smile

I've made wine glass charms, cost me next to nothing for the bits off ebay and then my Mum's made embroidered fabric hearts filled with lavender for the women and I've made mini jars of chilli jam for the men. those are doubling up as place names.

Well I was certain I wanted them, as I have always liked having them when being a wedding guest, but at the end of the night, we had about 15 favours left (from 56) (they were chocolates) so perhaps if it would be stretching the budget then don't worry, but if you have plenty of money or there's something you'd love, then it would look nice.

Really!? Who leaves chocolates!? If I dont eat them straight away I put them in my bag to make sure I dont forget them haha! I guess not everyone is as piggy as me!

I think favours are nice. Its not a big deal if you dont have them but I like them. We're having little heart shaped welsh cakes (my grandma used to make them for us when we were young) which my brother is baking, in a little box. Smiley smile

It comes from a wedding being a lucky day so the Bride and Groom give 'favours' to spread the luck. The nobles used to give sugary treats in jeweled boxes - then when it caught on the 'poorer' people gave small cloth bags. Traditionally it would be five sugared almonds that represented Health, Wealth, Happiness, Long Life and Fertility.

Obviously this has changed over the years to more of an edible gift - though my sister stuck with the almonds.

I like favours so we will be having them.

We are having a chocolate fountain so want to avoid sweets and find something different, while still keeping costs down, not sure about the women yet, but we're thinking maybe keyrings bottle openers for the men.

I agree that it's not worth spending a lot on favours! I've been to weddings where so many are left behind, it's so sad when people make the effort and guests just leave them ☹️

I love the idea of a vintage tea party with shabby chic style decor then a buffet later. If I do run with this then I’d like to put little patterned material tops on mini jam jars. I think they will be so cute and not a huge cost as I don't have a very big budget! Lots of DIY! I think DIY favours make it so much more special and personal anyway, as it's obvious you put care and effort into it.

Just need to think of something to put in them.........

We've decided to go down the charity route - both my parents have been diagnosed/treated for cancer over the last couple of years, so we've decided to go with the donation to cancer research. People get given the cancer research pin, but at least if they get left behind at the end I know that we donated the money to a cause that means a lot to us! If it wasn't for this, we would just be doing chocolates I'm sure!!

Charity pins or even a donation instead to a worthy cause think people would appreciate you doing that.. if not why not just pop some sweets on the table to share instead Smiley smile
