Favours....What to have...

sara.jo, 8 March, 2011 at 14:45 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hiya,

I have gone from not having favours at all, to just having them for all the girlies, to now maybe having them for everyone! The reason being, I would like to donate towards the Help Broken Hearts appeal that the British Heart Foundation are running at the moment. My Nan sadly passed away at the end of January and I would like to do something that will be in memory of her. What do you think you would prefer to receive?

Pin badge:

Or trolley coin ?

I was going to put a little note with them saying in memory of my Nan etc etc....what do you think?

I also wanted to make something to go with it - I have thought of lavender hearts to hang up, or cupcakes...Any ideas? Anything would be appreciated...I would just like it to be presented well alongside something else...And should I just do the ladies or the men too? So many questions!!

Thanks x

I think the pin badge looks nicer but the trolley coin would be more useful?!

Be wary of deciding to make something like cupcakes as think of how many you will have to make and decorate as close as possible to the wedding date.....I am a semi-pro cake maker and even I wouldn't attempt that!

I am making a big batch of jam and chutney and have lots of mini-jars which I will then pop into organza bags to make into our favours....which means I can make them up waaaaay in advance!

OOoh MrsShark you have just given me an idea! What about minature jam jars with the trolley coin linked with ribbon? I always had Lemon Curd at my Nans when I was a little girl. Is that easy to make?

I like the trolley coin. People are more likely to use these. We are doing the same for Cancer Research but think they only do the pins

Definitely agree with everyone else on the trolley tokens. I have one and I use it all the time wheras I have loads of pin badges that just sit in a drawer and slowly rust.

What about organza bags (which you can get farily cheaply) with mint imperials in them. They look like sugared almonds so very traditional but frankly after a big meal everyone could do with a mint and very few people will have them in their handbags.... Can then tie the trolley token on with the ribbon from the bag???

Hi by the way. First forum post. Total newbie to this xx

Another vote for the trolley coin, I would prefer something useful too. And I LOVE the lemon curd idea, it's only got about 4/5 ingredients so should be easy peasy to make!

Also, sorry to hijack the thread but what size jars are you using MrsShark? Not sure which size would be best!

Lemon curd is super easy to make, the only problem is that most recipes only suggest it lasts for two weeks in the fridge because of the eggs in it.

However, I know my nan used to make it in big batches and freeze it. Make sure you sterilise the jars first (I just wash mine in hot water then leave them to dry in the oven whilst it is at GM1 or a jar straight from the dishwasher is also classed as sterile) and I would try a batch first and freeze it then see how it comes out once thawed.

The recipe I have used before is Nigel Slater's - just double the quantities if you need more!

    Makes 2 small jam jars
zest and juice of 4 unwaxed lemons
    200g sugar
    100g butter
3 eggs and 1 egg yolk

Put the lemon zest and juice, the sugar and the butter, cut into cubes, into a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, making sure that the bottom of the basin doesn't touch the water. Stir with a whisk from time to time until the butter has melted.

Mix the eggs and egg yolk lightly with a fork, then stir into the lemon mixture. Let the curd cook, stirring regularly, for about 10 minutes, until it is thick and custard-like. It should feel heavy on the whisk.

Remove from the heat and stir occasionally as it cools. Pour into spotlessly clean jars and seal. It will keep for a couple of weeks in the refrigerator.

    And this is the seller I got the 1.5oz glass jars from;

I'm pretty sure I like lemon curd. Been soooo long since I last had it!!! But if someone gave it to me with a little story like yours as to why you'd specifically chosen it I'd absolutely eat every last bit. It's all about the personal touch x
