Feck feck....honeymoon could be cancelled

Lynseys Designs, 28 April, 2009 at 10:03 Posted on Planning 0 36

Because of the fecking swine flu. Malaysia isn't allowing anyone to travel in from America, Mexico, Canada and Australia. Scotland has 2 confirmed cases of Swine Flu which is just 1 mile from me so we could very easily be added to the list!

RIGHT NOW I WANT TO CRY!

Going to check out the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website and World Health Org now.

I am so sorry Lynsey, my cousin is sat at my mums as her and new hubby where going on honeymoon at 8.30 this morning to Mexico

Its Sh*t!, you need to speak to your travel agent they will advise you the best route at least you have to sort it. I know it does not help you, now as you are getting closer and closer to the wedding

    Chin up and keep smiling

I hope it's ok for you - my friend gets married on the 9th May and was going to Mexico, she's now panicing and looking for somewhere else.

We don't have a travel agent. We booked everything ourselves separately because of the type of holiday we wanted.

I'm trying to find out the telephone number of the Royal Brunei airline office in London but can't even find that.

The holiday will be covered by ATOS I am sure? or another body. Your insurane should also cover you. Its worth speaking to them also. We had to use our insurance as h2b's mum broke her hip the day before we where due to fly to Portugal. They paid out in 2/3 weeks, then my mum put a claim in when grandad passed away. His funeral was on the day they where to fly.

Is the phone no not on any paperwork?

Thanks very much. I eventually found the Airline number and they don't know anything really but did say so far the flight is still on.

I'll call the Brunei Travel number as well as I didn't know about that.

Unfortunately I'm at work and h2b is away this week so I don't have any paperwork with me at all for contact numbers and names.

    Thanks xx

All the articles I have read are saying that the WHO are not reccomending travel/flight restrictions because its not realisitcally likely to contain it - and only seen mexico specifically 'advised against' travelling to 'unless essential'...

    Where did you find this?

Certainly need to get insurance sorted now just in case.

Hope it doesn't stop you travelling.

It was on the news this morning but I can't find anything on WHO or FOC which is reassuring. I work for the NHS and it was a nurse that told me as she is also flying to Brunei to visit her daughter a week on Friday and she is now sitting in tears and the thought of not being able to go ☹️.

I'm trying not to stress too much since I can't find any official reports saying travel is restricted.

Dont know if this helps, just spoke to thomas crook ( and yes i spelt it right).

We are going to Florida for 4 days then onto Mexico, they just told me that because i am not actually arriving in Mexico till June i will still have to wait (possibly wont know till a week before we travel) however anyone traveling to Mexico up to the end of May will get a swap in destination!

Aparantly we wont get the the money back because the govermnet havent actually said that nobody should visit the country, they have only advised not to!

Sounds like a load of crock to me!

Hopefully you should still be ok, but they have told me to take it day by day!

Thats all we need really before our weddings especially as its the half term week aswell!

Sorry not much help here, but hope you get something sorted!

    That's sh*t luv ☹️.

Just seen this on the NHs site

"The Foreign Office has now advised against all but essential travel to Mexico. It also recommended that British nationals living in or visiting Mexico may wish to consider whether they should remain in Mexico at this time.

Travellers visiting affected areas should see a doctor immediately if they show signs of flu-like symptoms. The Mexican Secretariat of Health has advised people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands, kissing people as a greeting, or using the subway. Maintaining a distance of at least six feet from other people and frequent hand washing may also decrease the risk of exposure.

People returning from affected areas who become unwell within seven days of their return should stay at home and contact their GP or NHS Direct. They will be assessed and, if necessary, testing and treatment will be provided"

Can you get your money back on the trip to Mexico and go another time?, not much help but this will blow over at some point.

Debs it isn't Mexico we are going it's Borneo but Malaysia apparently said this morning travel is restricted into the country but not from the UK so far. It's just the fact we have 2 confirmed cases in the UK, actually a mile from my work, so they might add the UK to their list and then we can’t travel in. I'm trying not to worry as it hasn't been confirmed yet so we can't do anything yet. xx

Sorry love, my head has been all over the place lately....*blonde moment alert*, Malaysia is in Asia isn't it? ?, apparently they are the best prepared for this sort of thing and they are arranging for thermal scanners at their airports to check passengers, will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Hopefully you will get some good news soon ?

Ah min thats rubbish. try and not panic I know you are stressed at the mo anyway. remember the panic over the bird flu with those swans in scotland and that didn't come to much. You know what the medis is like too they will hype all this up even more than the bloody credit crunch xxx

Well the colleague that told me the news in the first place was wrong and she later apologised for causing unnecessary alarm however since SF has now been increased to a Level 5 and spreading amongst the community then the country could still deny any travel in. The WHO aren't advising against travel restrictions, apart from to Mexico, which is good news for us in the meantime.

However if it turns pandemic and reaches a Level 6 then my annual leave could be cancelled (I work for the NHS). When I got told this today my reply was 'well I'll be going off sick myself then' and my bosses reply was 'your contract would be terminated'!

So who knows is the current situation but I'm not stressing about something I can't control. If we can't travel I may as well return to work straight after the wedding and save my leave for another time but we stand to lose a lot of money.

I doubt it will come to all that but I'd rather there wasn't even the small chance it could!

I hope you get something sorted as well but when it comes to Mexico I think I'd rather not go right now. I think travel agents will cancel flights even if it is just to cover themselves but due to the fast changing circumstances I think they are going day by day.

    xx

Aww gawd, that's a major bummer for you, but it's better that you stay safe and healthy......though that's easy for me to say, I'd be really cheesed off if I though it could mean losing money.

I hope your insurance will sort it out for you.

I haven't even checked the insurance because I'm too scared to! What will be will be so I'm going to bury my head in the sand for as long as possible.

I might be saying I'm not stressing but I'm TERRIFIED actually. I even snapped at a colleague when she joked we might not be able to go. She got told it wasn't even funny and quickly realised how insensitive she had been and then I felt so guilty.
