I find it quite embarrassing if people don't even bother to learn how to say a few basics of the local language; surely "hello", "goodbye", "please" and "thank you" are simply polite?

My mam lived in rural Spain for a few years but while renovating an old house she stayed in an area that had quite a few expats.

She was in the supermarket queue behind an English lady who was speaking very loudly to the non-English speaking cashier. She then said 'You really need to learn more English'. Disgusting. My mam told her so.

Completely agree. My mam likes to force me into the local bodega to ask for various breads, meats etc. Says it's good for me. She's a laugh a minute my mam.

I totally agree with this. When we went to Germany last month, H wanted me to ask the hotel where we could park our campervan as the hotel car park looked too low. I was scrabbling around for my phrasebook (we'd just arrived there) and H said "they'll speak English, don't worry". But I thought it would be so rude to go up to someone and ask if they spoke a foreign language in said language. I wanted to make the effort as at least it showed I was trying!
