Feeling panick-y, is it a panic attack?

RedB, 21 August, 2009 at 15:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

Sounds like a stupid question I know but looking online to find out what a panic attack is, they mention breathlessness a lot which I dont have. But in the last week I've had a couple of episodes of feeling very nervous and stressed, that sick feeling in my stomach, and a feeling of anxiety, and aching limbs. But no breathlessness and I think my heart rate is normal-ish. When it happens I don't think it is specifically triggered by anything, although today I had some not so good news about how much money we have coming in, it wasn't completely disastrous, just that we will have to wait a bit longer before credit cards are cleared. But its been a fairly stressful year, two miscarriages, renovating a house with not much money, an ever stroppier toddler to manage and a threat of redundancy looming over me. Maybe this money thing is just the straw that broke the (panicked) camels back?

I know nothing about panic disorders and if it happens again will obviously see a doctor but wondered if anyone on here could give any personal insight on them?

Thanks

My heart rate definitely rises and I can't breathe properly. I get very dizzy (probably because I'm not breathing properly) and feel like the whole room is closing in on me. I can usually be found sitting in a ball on the floor in the corner of a room sobbing uncontrobably afterwards.

I've had what you're describing and i've had a full on panic attack.

My panic attack had hyperventilation, tunnel vision and a need to run (i was in a not too packed bar at the time). I then got clammy, cold and felt quite faint.

The "minor" panic symptoms are like you describe. A real jittery feeling, butterflies in stomach feeling. Not feeling in control, can't concentrate - not dissimilar to too much caffeine for me. I haven't worked out a way to stop it.

Hope you feel better soon. Maybe some way of calming down could help - a sort of self hypnosis?

I get this feeling sometimes. I think the aching limbs are from adrenalyn. I don't think of it as a panic attack (people I know who have them talk about feeling they're going to die, that their heart will explode etc, and I don't feel like that at all) but rather just as a period of feeling anxious. Whether it's a problem is a personal question, I think- if you feel worried about it then definitely speak to your GP. But I find that just accepting it for what it is- a temporary period of anxiety- helps it pass.

That's exactly it, a jittery feeling and it does feel like too much caffeine, you are right. Will just try and focus on something else for a bit and self medicate with cake!

Thanks both of you for taking the time to respond
