Feeling tired - this isn't what I was expecting!

l0vaduck, 22 August, 2012 at 20:07 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 4

I've been reducing my food intake for just over 6 weeks and upping my exercise, and have managed to lose 11 lbs, which I'm happy with.

I've been doing more exercise: the biggest is swimming twice a week for half an hour, in which time I do just over 30 lengths. On top of that I've been using a power plate for 10 minutes for the past week or so (I'm just trying it - the jury's out on whether it does any good), taking some long walks, and going on some longer than usual bike rides. I can't do any exercise classes because I have a cartiledge problem which means I find it difficult getting up off the floor!

Trouble is the exercise is not getting any easier. After walking to the baths and back yesterday I was completely drained for the rest of the day, and even walking upstairs is an effort. Bear in mind I've been doing this for four weeks so I haven't just started. Cycling up hills is really getting to me and I find I'm using a lower gear for hills which in the past I wouldn't have even noticed. I don't think I can be overdoing it, as I always vary the exercise so I don't overexert the same muscles two days running - anyway it's not really painful muscles that are the problem, just overwhelming sluggishness!

Has anyone experienced this awful fatigue, and if so what did you do about it?

How much have you lowered your food intake? Are you eating all the essentials? x

Hi, I think so, I take a multivitamin, and I think I'm probably eating about 1200 calories a day, which is probably what I need to do as my metabolism is highly efficient! I'm not very overweight so it's hard work to lose anything. I sometimes hanker for the days in my twenties when I could lose half a stone in a week just by cutting out snacks!

I'm making a special effort to include more protein as I'm vegetarian and when I used Fitday.com to analyse my nutritional intake it showed that the majority of my calories were from carbs, which isn't good as I'm diabetic as well.

My blood sugars are fine, so that's not what's causing the tiredness.

Interestingly according to Fitday I should be losing weight faster than I am: I think it overestimates my base calorie requirements. A very depressing part of being over 40!
