Feeling wobbly

Vintage84, 8 March, 2012 at 16:51 Posted on Planning 0 13

Okay, this is totally unfounded and a total bride to be freak out but I'm feeling a bit wobbly about our venue. The reason? Don't laugh...I went on to Trip Advisor and all the latest reviews are about bad service, building works and a lack of care/attention to detail.

I emailed the venue (because we haven't sent our contracts back yet) and said "I know this website attracts people who love to moan but can you just confirm there are no scheduled building works for April 2013"...they haven't come back to me yet but I can't shake this wobbly feeling. I know it's probably completely unfounded...I think I just need some lovely hitchers to tell me to get a grip!

Wedding venue is here (in the Hampshire Suite) https://www.oldthorns.com/wedding-venues-in-hampshire/

    Hi Vintage,

Your venue looks lovely! I would do exactly as you are doing and just get confirmation to put your mind at rest. Also, do you have a Birthday or Anniversary coming up? Maybe book in for one nights stay to 'trial' it out!

Take a few breaths and try to relax! I agree that you should go for dinner or an overnight and you are so right to check with them. Don't feel bad about it! It looks like a great venue and hopefully it's just a few wingy people but if you are unsure, don't hesitate to wait for confirmation from them about the situation.

Its probably not what you want to hear but I personally would not book anywhere that had really terrible reviews. We actually checked out reviews of potential venues first and any that had more than a few bad ones OH insisted we discounted, he didn't want to take the chance. Are the reviews of anything specific that involved other weddings? Or are they more general as a hotel?

Also I contribute quite regularly as I think it is important to give feedback regularly and TA is obv a huge site so I know my reviews may be handy to a large readership - lots of people there do take care to give honest views, good and bad, and personally when a place is good I put that too, and not just have a moan about the bad places. Not saying its the be all and end all but if those poor reviews are from regular reviewers who have given other balanced reviews then watch out!

There were lots of positive reviews but they were over 6 months old. To be honest I said the "attracts people who like to moan" bit because I was a bit worried about offending them. I've just found another hitcher who's getting married there in 3 days so I'll keep an eye out for her flash & see what its like!

If i was you i would do a post on hitched with the venue in the title asking if anyone has been married there, or been to a wedding there, hopefully someone has a personal review they can give you? when i was looking at venues there was 2 we really liked, when we asked for avalible dates no1 venue was fully booked for summer/autermn saturdays in 2013 apart from the one we took! and the second venue was yet to take a 2013 booking! so we went for the first one, 4 months on my oh's boss took his wife to stay at no2 venue and said it was terrible! so i would ask what there availibility is for 2013 so far could be a good indication if any other brides to be have seen any problems that you have maybe missed? try not to worry to much, we stayed at the most amazing 5* hotel in paris and trip adviser had 2 saying it was a discusting place, yet in oct we stayed in an apparent 5* hotel in isle of wight it had amazing reviews yet me and oh could barely move in our room!

As chidders said, go and have a trial run, nothing like putting them on the spot and whilst ther I woukd ask about the building work. If you have a bad experience then it may help you decide.

    Hello

Were getting married there in December 12 and I have only good things about the venue. I have known a few 'friends of friends' go there and they said they could not fault the service. We also bumped in to another couple who had got married there that day (we were with our florist no venue staff) and they said it was excellent, the only thing they did say was that they may seem a little unorganised before the big day but it was spot on on the day it counted.

    Hope this reassures you slightly.

    Kerry x

That's good! Hopefully its just a few reviewers picking on petty things then. Definitely book in for a trial for yourself anyway to put your mind at rest.

Oh thank you Kerry, that does make me feel better! To be honest I think I'm just feeling rather depressed, my nan died on Sunday & I haven't really spoken to anyone about it. I thought looking at the venue would cheer me up but I saw the trip advisor stuff and it just made me feel worse : (

Sorry to hear about you sad news (big hugs x) my nan passed away about 3 weeks ago and we are getting married on what would have been her birthday.

It is a lovely venue and I have heard so many good things. April is a lovely time of year so hopefully there will be lots of sunshine and blue sky!

We had Sunday dinner there before christmas and the food was lovely. Have I reassured you enough!?!?!

    Take care xx
