Fiance was made redundant today...

AliLindsey, 30 March, 2009 at 15:24 Posted on Planning 0 27

...and although it was predicted it's still pretty rubbish. He'd worked for his company for 20 years. They're getting rid of his building completely. To be fair, he has been offered a very generous payoff. Which is only right considering he's worked there for half his life!

So I guess we'll now have to sit down and do some serious maths regarding where we go from here. The wedding will still go ahead - we should be ok cash-wise for that, but looking at the bigger picture and taking a pessimistic look at how long it will take him to get another job, we'll have to decide whether we go ahead and rent out his house, or sell it.

So all in all, could be worse, but could be a lot better. I know we're not the only people in this situation on this forum - so let's all try and think positively about the future. New start for us all hopefully.

Ali ☹️

So sorry to hear that Ali but sounds like you have got some ideas about how to deal with whatever the future brings so wish you both the best of luck and hope OH finds something soon.

Even if it is expected as you say its still always a shock.

Mine too, it sucks doesn't it? He's only been there 2 years so no big payoff for him, infact from the sounds of things I am convinced they are going to try and screw him over.

Really sorry to hear that, it's definitely a worrying time at the moment.

As others have said though, it looks as if you've got the right positive attitude, and thankfully you can still have your wedding. It's great that he at least got a decent pay out. Hope he manages to find something else soon.

That is horrible news Ali! At least he will get a decent pay out, and being in a job that long always looks good I think. I hope he finds something suitable quickly.

CD - sorry to hear your news too.

Oh cr4p! Poor you! Glad to hear that you are (as well as you can be) prepared for it though. good on you for having budgeted sensibly for a wedding you can realsiitcially afford and having enough to live on through a few lean months too! Good luck for his job hunt - and fingers crossed he gets something even better paid and that he enjoys - and asap so that it all works out to your advantage in the end.

(feel a bit guilty for having just posted a completely trivial problem right nect to this now ?) Sorry!

That's rubbish news but all too common at the moment. On the positive side it's a chance to try something new. My OH always wanted to be self employed and when he was made redundant decided to risk it. Best thing that ever happened to us, works brilliantly with childcare and my job, and now he can employ his sons too.

    Ali and CD

Rotten rotten rotten. No matter if it was expected or not its still horrible to go through. Ali you sound really positive and I think this really makes a difference.

Things do happen for a reason (although at the time it may not feel like it) and maybe the chance to do something he really wants?

    Positive vibes!!!!

Ali thats a big pile of poop but glad to hear you're being fairly philosophical about it (is that the correct spelling?!) Hope the job hunt goes well and doesn't affect your enjoyment of the lead up to your big day!

CD - that too is pants - sorry to hear.

Sending positive thoughts to you both and wishing you a lottery win :0)

Sorry to hear that Ali, at least there is a silver lining with the payout. What business was your OH in? Its crap at the mo isn't it every day there is another company closing. I was in town today and shocked at the number of empty shops.

    Hugs for you

Horrible thing to happen but hopefully something positive will come out of it. As others have asked, what line of work is your H2B in?

Oh Ali - thats awful even if you see it coming its never easy is it? Great that he's got a good payout and if he gets a job before that runs out then thats a bigger bonus isn't it?

I know how it feels, I have been in a contract for a year and they have been saying for a while we hope to make you permanent etc, I found out on Friday they can't extend it even. Times are so tough for everyone, but like others said it sounds like you have a plan and it will be a great test for married life and showing each other support and love. Best wishes for his search x

Thanks for the good wishes all. And CD - sorry to hear that you're going through a similar thing. And Cat - sorry that things are not looking so bright for you either.

Iain was in records management and archiving for an oil company.

They're working up until Easter, then he's on "gardening" leave. The garden needs doing actually, so maybe that's quite appropriate!

Oh Lucy, that's really crap. Do they not even have to give them the statutory redundancy? I thought that was the law? I could be wrong though.

I'm spending lunchtime trawling the job sites! I think he should do mystery shopping!
