Films that made an impression on you

Redbedhead, 21 May, 2008 at 20:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 63

I finally got round to watching Brokeback Mountain this week, a few years after everyone else and have found it has really made an impression on me. I keep remembering little bits of the film and keep feeling sad about how it all ended.

What films have you watched that left a lasting impression on you?

'One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' made a massive impression when I was doing my a'levels. It was on at about 2am and I'd heard of it so set the video and watched it the next day instead of revising - I sobbed all day.

Also 'Life is Beautiful' - another one that made me sob.

I've never been able to watch either of them again incase they don't make such an impression second time around.

The Pianist - seen it once never been able to watch it again. For some reason I just found it really upsetting but since having my son I do find most films about Nazi occupation too much for me these days [blush]

Brokeback Mountain was fantastic, it definitely made a long lasting impression on me too. I'm embarrassed to admit that the film which had the strongest impression on me, is Hope Floats. I know it's horribly girly, but I remember watching it at a time in my life when I was incredibly unhappy in a relationship. Now, whenever I need a 'pick me up', or I'm feeling low, it still has the same effect on me. Goodness knows why, I'm really not into those types of films as a rule!

Crash - It really made me think about the inadvertent things you do and judgments you make subconsciously.

Crash was a great film. I always momentarily get it mixed up with that car crash sex film James Spader was in too though.

Children of Men, especially the bit when the baby cries and the fighting stops. I found the whole film quite moving in a strange and hard to describe way.

    Recently i think Babel

there were bits that were incredibly contrived and ridiculous - but other parts that absolutely wrenched at me

    it changes

perhaps ridiculously i think one of the most impactful films i have watched was gone with the wind

Schindler's List - I just cannot make it beyond the 'badge' scene without breaking down. Immensely powerful.

I'm sure that there are others but they are more if I'm feeling fragile I think - I'm a bad girl for thinking "Yeah but it's just a film" - not something the SL lets you get away with.

I'm going to have a proper think now....

(Oh yeah ok, Watership Down, blubfest)

I've not even seen the whole film but there's a scene in Sophie's Choice that I saw since having my son and it makes me feel sick and start to sweat just thinking about it.

The scene sneaks up on me at odd times and flicks through my mind.I probably should watch the whole film and hope it dilutes the effect.

Interestingly enough, this comment could apply to both the recent feature films with that title - I suppose it depends on whether you're talking about inadvertent racism or trying to achieve orgasm through car crashes. Or indeed both.

    I'm filling up even now.

The Magdalene Sisters. I was truly shocked.

Secretary. I was amazed that a film could so well represent a need that was very personal to me at that time, in a way that fully expressed the breadth of the feeling, without focussing on the activity itself.

Vera Drake. That would have been me. Except I'd have been more savvy.

Oh Gosh. Curiosity got the better of me but I knew I shouldn’t have wikki’d Sophies choice.

Maybe you should read the book Zeb, it might put the memory in context in a less visual way?

Sorry, I should have given a better description.

My imagination when I read books is very visual, I think I'm too afraid. How sad is that?

Other films - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, for reasons that I can't even start to explain, and Nikita - really haunting.

I can't watch the Magdalene Sisters - I read about the places and it's just beyond my comprehension.

Don't be sorry at all, you made it clear it was unpleasant- I know what you mean about the books too,in fact it may well be worse so that was a bad suggestion. Its so horrible when you can't get past an image though, I know exactly what you mean.

Not a bad suggestion at all - I confess I didn't even know it was a book until you mentioned it!

Monsoon Wedding - bittersweet and utterly beautiful.

White Squall - a tad cheesy but so tragic at the same time. Breath-takingly shot.

Agree with The Green Mile and Gone With the Wind.

Another for me was the animated When The Wind Blows - I still get shivers thinking about it.

Oh, and Pretty In Pink, made me realise it's ok to be a geek.

Dancer in the Dark, the long final scene. I wish I hadn't seen it as I found it so harrowing and any mention of the death penalty now brings it unbidden into my head.
