Finding a Dress

MrsToffee, 2 November, 2013 at 10:41 Posted on Planning 0 7

I've been to three different shops so far and tried on 5 or 6 dresses in each. In the second shop I found a dress I really liked and didn't want to take off but didn't have that 'This is it' moment and now looking back at pictures I'm not sure about it. In the shop I went to yesterday there were two really lovely dresses but again I didn't feel like I 'had' to have either of them, they were also a little different to the one in the second shop which makes me think I don't really know what I want but then looking through some that I've bookmarked they are more similar in style to the ones yesterday than the other one... arrghh!

How many dresses did you try on before deciding and is there anyone who didn't have that 'the one' moment?

I love my dress but I loved most dresses I tried on. I am a practical person and I didn't believe 'the one' existed and I still don't really.

I asked a lady in the shop about this because I was worried and she said they are beautiful dresses that are very expensive and well designed so you should feel good in them all. With her brides there are always several that could be the one. In the end I went for the one I didn't want to take off, but was it 'the one' in the shop? No, but it is now because it is my dress.

I went to about 12 shops and tried on between 4 and 15 in each - that's a lot of dresses! Finally, I found the dress that I thought I wanted, but I think I'd got a bit blase from all the dresses I'd tried on and so talked myself into it because everyone else loved it. I put a deposit down (just to secure the price - not to order it) and soon I started to have some doubts. A few months later I went back to try it on and it didn't blow me away so I sat back and really thought about it.

I got my deposit back and tracked down the two dresses that I kept going back to look at online. I tried these on, as well as a few more at different shops (I'd loved some Maggie Sottero dresses and hadn't tried any on first time around) and then I made my mind up very quickly. Now I've ordered 'the dress' and have no doubts whatsoever. I worked out that in the end I had about 15 visits to bridal shops and probably tried on around around 80 dresses. I loved trying on dresses to tell the truth but did start to worry that I'd never find one that really stood out from the others!

I probably still didn't really have that moment, but then I'm probably more practical than emotional anyway. I did find though that I was looking at the dress online every day and always thinking about it after I tried it on. When I took my mum and sister with me to try it on again I really didn't want to take it off and I couldn't stop smiling!

Thanks both! I guess I am more practical but when trying on clothes normally I sometimes get a 'I must have it' feeling and suppose I want the same with my dress. That's a whole lotta shops Trish, I've got a while yet so suppose I should just keep looking! I love the Maggie Sottero ones as well and the two yesterday were by her although they were over my budget at that shop.

The first dress I tried was in tk maxx and I loved it - fitted beautifully and I bought it. I then thought it was too plain so took it back.

I then tried about 80 dresses in lisds of shops and liked quite a few. I found one I loved and bought it. ...then lost 2 stone and tried it on again and hated it.

I then tried maggie sottero lorrie and loved it! ...but felt like the front was too tight...

do I went to a big sale at francescas and finally found 'the' dress. To ve honest, with so many stunning dresses out there its really hard to choose. Not evetyone has a wow moment so go witb your heart. Find a dress that you feel good in, really good and that feels like you.

most of all, pay attention to the ladies in the shops regarding shape but dont listen to friends and family - they are trying to help but have their own tastes which may not match your own.

font be afraid to try 100s if thats what it takes x

I have this exact same problem! I went dress shopping today and tried on a few different styles of dresses, and the lady in the shop asked me after each dress to decide which was my favourite, so whether I liked the dress I had got on better than the one I had chosen as my favourite. The one that ended up as my favourite was beautiful, but when I first tried it on I didn't get that "this is the one" feeling. I think I talked myself into it being my favourite because it was just better than all the others. I did eventually really like it, and didn't want to take it off, but i'm not sure if it was just because it was my favourite out of that bunch of dresses. I look back at pictures on the internet now, and don't like it (i'm not sure if it's because the pictures I have found are all of women a different shape and size to me) and i'm worried about spending so much money on a dress now, that I'm not going to like in 9 months time!

Also, the dress I tried on was a 14/16 and i'm a size 8/10, so I'm thinking that it might look totally different when it's in the right size, but the store only holds one size in each dress! Help!!

I actually don't think 'the one exits', I tried on maybe 50 dresses and they were all pretty. Some didn't suit me but the ones that did all looked nice. I started to think I'd never find one I loved. Eventually I went for the Mori Lee 4163 and I've had a French bustle and a lace up back added and some lace sewn onto it and now I really love it. Good luck xx

I went to one shop, tried on 5 dresses...knew by the 3rd what one I wanted but tried on 2 more to make sure but went back to the one I originally wanted.
I knew I wanted it as I thought it suited my shape the most and I just preferred it to anything else, was also completely different to what I was originally after.
I didn't have a special feeling though or it being "the one", and I didn't cry or anything like that although my mum shed a little tear.
I think some people genuinely don't have a feeling in particular about a certain dress and go with a favourite as well as whats practical, suits shape best etc.
Don't think it over too much and don't buy anything til 100% sure, i'm sure you'll find the right one for you soon Smiley smile

Thanks all; I've been looking on the web today and found some in very similar shape to those of yesterdays shop but more similar in fabric and features like sparkly bits to the first one so think I will find exactly what I want eventually; just need to keep trying!
