Finding a dress in no time at all...

LisaMH78, 15 November, 2014 at 20:19 Posted on Planning 0 15

Ladies - I have just signed up to the site having got engaged and booked our wedding venue in the last few weeks. The thing is we are getting married on Good Friday next year and I have only just realised that means I will be pushing it to get a made to order dress in time. Does anyone have any experience of getting the right dress in a matter of months or anyone have any 'off the peg' recommendations! I am feeling stressed already!

My best friend got hers off the peg and you couldn't tell at all! She didn't have time to get one ordered so had no choice but she has no regrets at all. She even got a large discount with accessories included too!

Congratulations and welcome to hitched! The majority of bridal shops will have sale/ex sample dresses for sale off the peg. Although I hadn't planned to, mine ended up being a sample dress and I love it! As others have mentioned there are outlet shops who only sell off the peg dresses, so you do have plenty of options, but I would start dress shopping as so as you can!

Thanks ladies - the reassurance and advice helps! I'm just outside Reading so if anyone has any recommendations for outlets nearby it would be much appreciated!!

I got engaged 16 weeks before my wedding. I had no issue finding a dress. Most can be in within 4 months, but for some this was a 'rush order' (more money!)I ended up getting a dress from a sample sale for a whopping £1000 off the tag price!

You might want to check what designers take ages to get the orders in before you fill in love with dress! I told each dress shop when the wedding was and they only showed me dresses that could be ordered in time.

Ellis bridal seem to have a fairly short order time. I ordered mine last week & have been told it will arrive mid- Feb/march

Thank you all - really helpful. I've got some appointments booked now so fingers crossed. Felt really stressed about leaving it late and then all the 'you'll need to go up two dress sizes as wedding dresses come up small' made me worry all the more - I'm a size 14 and tall so have almost convinced myself I am the most abnormal shape going!!

Hi Lisa, you will be fine! I booked my wedding about 3 weeks ago for 21st February 2015 and I found my dress yesterday Smiley smile)

As long as you are realistic and go into shops with the expectation that you will probably end up with off the peg rather than made to measure then you are halfway there. I went to the wedding dress factory outlet in Bromley last weekend, if that's feasible for you travel wise then definitely worth a look. Just make lots of appointments, and give yourself lots of options.

Oh and as for size/shape, do not worry - I am 5'2 and all the dresses had so much fabric around me and the shop told me they are cut for someone 6ft tall and adjusted to suit!

Good luck and keep us posted xx

I've bought a Nicola Anne dress. I paid a deposit to my bridal shop in May but told them I wanted to lose weight and she said she would find out from Nicola Anne what the latest ordering date was and call me in for measurements then. I was measured the second weekend in September and my dress arrived in the shop a week ago, so it only took 8 weeks.

The first time I got married I shopped for dresses in February half term and ordered a Mori Lee dress which arrived within plenty of time for my August 2nd wedding.

It seems to be a common worry with brides that dresses take many months to come in, but really you shouldn't have a problem with getting any dress you want as long as you shop soon.

I got my gorgeous Justin Alexander dress in 4 months no problem. I was advised in the shop that there were certain brands that would def not be available in that short time though so it is best to check with the shop as they know the turnaround time of the suppliers. They just didn;t let me look at those so I didn't get disappointed!
