Finding a photographer! General Q.

Amethyst, 5 March, 2009 at 22:21 Posted on Planning 0 14

This is probably one of the things I am most worried about getting 'right' - I love, love, love photos - take millions (of highly amateur ones!) myself.

Anyway the venue we booked last weekend sent us a pack with lots of suppliers in which I have been going through tonight. I really like one of the togs - I'm quite keen to get someone who knows the venue well - her photos look fab she seems to offer all the things we want - hours of coverage, pre-wedding shoot, option to have photos on CD instead of album, in our price range, OH liked her pics etc....

Just about to email her but apart from asking if she is free on my date - not sure what else to say - I mean I guess you wouldn't book a tog without meeting them? What other things should I find out?

If she covers most of the bases then I would simply check her availability and then see if she can arrange a meeting with you (as I assume she's Suffolk-based and therefore one of you would have to travel)?

From my own experience, our tog had plenty of questions for us when we met her, so that she could gauge exactly what we wanted, so I doubt you'll need to go into too much depth at this stage.

Thanks Kelly (again!)! She is indeed Suffolk based - I am starting to spot the pitfalls of 2 busy people organising a wedding there from London! However, it is a lovely part of the world so will be fab to go up there as often as we need to.

I asked the three I met questions about what they can do in bad weather, timings and what she looks for in a photo, I.e. I want her to be creative and not only take photos of things I write on a list. The 'tog whose website I liked the most was actually the most disappointing irl, he was so nervous and showed me a tiny portfolio, mainly of the same photo with different photoshop effects. It really needs to be someone you gel with, I'd recommend meeting 3 at least.

I would seriously recommend looking at other photographers that are local to your area. many will have done your venue although will not necessarily be "on the list" of the venue. What you want is a good photographer, not a person good at "networking" and schmoozing venues.

Hmmm good points Sarah-Kay & Peter. There is quite a big list so I shall have a better look.

Or does anyone out there know someone based on the Suffolk / Essex border?

It's a very good suggestion to meet at least three photographers. There is so much vairiety that you need at least this number to be confident that you are making the right decision. One suggestion, when meeting your photographer is to ask them to show you their last wedding, not just a collection of their best shots over the last few years. By looking at their most recent work, you can get a good idea of how consistant they are. All photographers will want to show you their best work, but if they are not producing that standard week after week, then you should stay away.

We can also cover that area, if you are interested fill in one of our request forms and I will send you a price list.

Great point Peter! Don't stick to the preferred list, i've seen some of these lists and they definately don't always contain the best suppliers!

When I was looking for a photographer I looked based on their portfolio, then packages and flexibility on those.

We wanted a certain amount of coverage and digital prints only as we're emigrating and don't want to be hording anything else, and the albums we looked at were huge and heavy!

When we met our photographer we knew straight away that they were the ones for us, they were polite, professional, fun and most importantly we felt comfortable with them

I think you just just know when someone is the right person for the job, can't wait to see how they photograph our wedding

I think you're absolutely right to meet a number of different photographers, and I think the way you get on with them also has a big influence on whether you choose to work with them or not. They could be the best photographer in the world, but if they make your day a misery by barking orders at you and your guests, then it won't be much fun.

Once thing worth trying is to have a pre-wedding photoshoot or engagement photoshoot with them. That way, you can see how they work with you. I found this article quite handy for choosing our photographer.

Good luck and have a fantastic day!

They cover this area and have done absolutely beautiful pictures for my wedding and a number of my friends. Their stuff is really elegant and stylish and they're offreing a £500 deal at the moment. It covers before during and after the ceremony reportage, group shots and portraits and you get a dvd containing all the images yourself. They also do premium packages with albums and stuff if you are looking to spend a bit more.

The most important thing is that you gel with them and feel comfortable - also check with everyone that you will get all the images high res on a disc - some photographers will rip you off and charge extra for this!

    Good luck,

    Cx
