Finding/choosing an unusual ring

SecretlyEloped, 12 July, 2014 at 12:31 Posted on Planning 0 13

I'm looking for advice from hitchers who have got unusual rings - how did you find them? and did you worry about changing your mind years down the line?

I am doing the ring thing topsy-turvy, in that I am looking for an "engagement" ring to match my wedding ring, as I am now married and OH has NOW decided he wants me to have an engagement ring which I never had.

Thing is my wedding ring is unusual. It's a slim rose gold eternity style band with coloured stones in red, blue, pink, yellow and white (diamonds, sapphires etc.)

I want a rose gold ring (it has to be 18ct to sit next to my wedding ring), and I don't want a diamond solitaire because I would prefer to have a coloured stone(s) and think this would look better with my wedding ring anyway.

Plenty of jewellers I have been into tell me they can make up anything I want in rose gold but they don't have many (or any!) rings in rose gold to see, and I don't want to order something without seeing that I like the way it looks in rose gold first. I also want it to sit nicely against my wedding ring.

I HAVE seen a ring I like (well, love!) but it is VERY unusual. I am hesitant to flash it because I don't want to be influenced by people saying "it's not my taste, I don't like it", because after all jewellery is a very personal thing. But I keep worrying that I might change my mind in 30 years... but I still feel head over heels in love with it!

Help me with your thoughts and advice please...

The thing is, tastes change as fashions change. Yes you might not like it in 30 years time, but you might. With any engagement or wedding ring it's more about what it signifies than worrying if you'll like it 5, 10, 20 years down the line. If you love it now, get it Smiley smile x

Please flash it! I love unusual things and I am very curious! It doeant matter if its not to others' tastes, as long as its to yours that is all that matters :-)

So what if it's unusual, it reflects who you are and it'll always make you remember when you got it. I don't think my ER will be in fashion in 30 years but to be honest, I couldn't care less.

(Would love a flash of either ring if you change your mind)

To be honest, if you love it now you're probably going to love it in 30 years time. It sounds like your wedding ring is quite unusual and you didn't have the same concerns about that by the sounds of it. Perhaps if you're not sure if you will still love this ring, then maybe you need to keep looking?

I never even thought about whether i would love my rings in 30 years. I just love my ER so much, even five years after we got engaged!

My ER is unusual in that it is a solitaire ruby, it came from Diamond Boutique, they do some amazing gemstone rings.

Just had a look at Diamond Boutique but they only have 1 ring in rose gold. I have asked them to contact me about their bespoke service and I will see what happens!

For those of you curious about the ring, here it is (be nice!):

I got mine from our local auction house when they had a fine art sale. I have never seen another ER like mine and its nice to know that it has a history too.

I think the ring looks beatiful!

I think chances are you will still like it in 30 years - it'll hold so many memories for you, and if you don't - you don't! It won't be the end of the world.

Oh wow! That is so cute! I love it.

I will be having an unusually-shaped wedding ring, so I'm planning on wearing my engagement ring on my right hand after I get married, or getting it resized to sit on another finger on my left hand. If the ring you love doesn't sit nicely against your wedding ring, maybe that would be an option?

As you say, jewellery is very personal. So you shouldn't worry about whether it's to other people's tastes. If you've fallen in love with it (and it's in budget), then you should get it ?

We are having ours made - the guy we are getting them from basically said he can do whatever we wanted. I just wanted a simple band with a flowery pattern engraved on the outside and both OH and I have the same words engraved on the insides. I love that no one in the world will have the same rings as ours!

Thanks MadamRed! The ring actually sits beautifully next to my wedding ring. It's at the top of budget so not over budget but I was hoping to find something less costly really.

Could you haggle them down a bit? It's a bit different for us in that we have had my wedding ring made bespoke, but I nearly cried when the jeweller gave us the original price. It wasn't intentional, but it prompted the jeweller to offer to see what he could do about the price. We ended up saving over £500. (Although it means I can't gain or lose any weight now because we've had to buy the ring almost 3 years in advance lol)
