First Dance

Anne2015, 27 February, 2015 at 08:28 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi everyone.

We're trying to pick a first dance. We are going to get something basic choreographed Smiley smile . We both quite like Ed Sheeran's thinking out loud but it is a very popular song and would be nice to having something a little different.

What are everyone's thoughts on Ellie Goulding's new song - Love me like you do? Ok or too tied into Fifty Shades? I've read the books but not seen the film so kind of just associate it with parts from the book.

    I love that song!

I'm sure it will be in our wedding somewhere.

I know someone who got married last week and had that as their first dance.x

    Hi,

Yes Ed's song is very popular but if it's your song then that will be fine! (Routine ready to go in the video too!)

The wedding we played for last week had the new Ellie Goulding track for their first dance. It is a lovely first dance song...still really fresh and new too.

May I make a suggestion? I'm not sure if you have hired a band or DJ for your evening reception, but if you have hired a live band and are planning to have a choreographed first dance, it's probably best to ask the DJ to play the original version of whichever song you choose.

Even though a good professional band would perform either the Ed Sheeran or Ellie Goulding song in the same tempo and using the same structure as the original song, there may well be little musical "signposts" in the original versions that are missing when a live band plays - that's just the nature of live music. If you're relying on these signposts for your choreography, then there's always the chance that the choreography won't be as you want it.

Thanks Hard to Handle Band, we aren't having a band. We're just having a DJ.

The other question is... if you have a song that has a happy memory with it but it's not about happy love ( it's about breaking up) do you think it wouldn't be right to use it?

There are some songs that sound perfect and you sing along too without realising the depths of the lyrics.

Greenday's 'Time of your life' is also called 'Good Riddance' and might not be the ideal first dance.....

Disagree a little bit with Hard to Handle about not having a band play your first dance. If it's a choreographed dance then make sure that your band have the correct instrumentation to make it sound like the track.

We would then create a click track to the exact tempos (speed of the song) so that it's exactly as you have rehearsed it. Yes it takes lots of rehearsal for the band too but a professional band enjoy the challenge! Smiley smile

We have played for many choreographed FD's and it always goes down really well. The last one we did was The Goo Goo Dolls 'All that you are'. A tricky track but it sounded great!
