First Dance- Choreography?

WhiteSparkles, 25 February, 2011 at 18:44 Posted on Planning 0 9

Has anyone had (or plan to have) their first dance choreographed for them? As the wedding is getting so close, I'm starting to worry about the first dance as EVERYONE there will be watching us! Is it worth the money to get someone to spend a few hours giving us some tips on moves??

We are having ours done. No stupidity like you see on youtube though just choreographed in a ballroom sense so that I dont have to worry about looking a prat. I hate dancing so if I know I have something actually learnt I will feel much about it.

something like this I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyqgP6i-bGg

From what couples have told me, they really enjoyed the dance lessons leading up to the wedding, and when time came for the first dance, because they had been working on the routine for a few weeks, it made it more relaxing and fun for them. Plus it put their focus on each other and what they were doing, rather than worrying that people were watching them. The main thing is to do what you will enjoy as a couple.

If I can offer one piece of advice, make sure you practice wearing a skirt of a similar size to that which you will be wearing on the day!

I have seen a few choreographed first dances that have not gone as well as planned because of this, then you're more stressed, rather than relaxed.

I choreograph dances for some of my couples....both the ballroomy type and the bizarre! ( just putting the finishing touches on one that starts with a sedate modern waltz and finishes with a highland fling) The first question I ask my bride (usually in private) is what kind of dress and shoes she'll be wearing.

We are having dance lessons, but we met ballroom dancing so everyone is going to expect us to dance and be good..... so far it is the only bit H2b has shown any interest in!

We are planning on have some ballroom/rock n roll lessons beforehand, but not necessarily a structured dance routine. I only recently found out (after 9yrs) that OH is scared stiff of the 1st dance & dancing in general. He always seemed ok before at others peoples weddings. I suggested the lessons thinking he would definately say no way- BUT, I think he was grateful I thought of it.

Contact a local dance studio they should be able to help but go armed with an idea of the type of music you see yourself throwing down some shapes to!
