First dances. Is the Music important?

Our first dance music is absolutely crucial to us, but I completely get that nobody will remember it except us. As "the music couple" in our group, we feel under immense pressure to make a brilliant choice (which would, of course, match our music taste anyway, lol). However, we are determined to pick something that is "us", not something that is "wedding first dance". We don't have particular songs we count as "ours", but we do have songs that we both love to dance to. So one of those, I guess, but it will definitely be indie/punk/rock, it will not involve smooching and I will sing loudly and possibly jump.*

*dependent on shoe situation.

With that said would you take into consideration the lyrics of the song when choosing or go for a song that means something to you and your OH regardless of what the lyrics were?

Our first dance was important to us as it gave us 5 min for a catch up while we hugged and swayed it felt very private inspite of the watching guests. However when it came to choosing the music for the first dance the only thing that mattered was it was a song that reminded us of each other so we ended up with a top 3 list and then got the cat to choose non were particulary classic 1st dance songs.

More important to us than the first dance was the overall blend of music, we want songs through out the nigth that all our guests would enjoy that would get us dancing and that held special memories for us.

He he, we wouldn't worry if the lyrics were about leaving someone/being sad/etc. Have idly discussed a sweary Nine Inch Nails effort but decided that was pushing it a bit (even if the lyrics are actually quite monumentally appropriate).

Drifter thats how me and OH both feel, we are having U2 With or Without you, for the simple reason that every time we hear it we think of each other, we both love it and it has great meaning to us. I posted this a few weeks ago and alot of hitchers thought I was bonkers for having it saying that the lyrics were not suitable, my argument was sod the lyrics the lyrics arent important to me its what the song actually means to me and OH.

My OH doesnt really dance so for me first dance is really important because it will be 3rd time I've danced with OH in our 4 years together.

I've picked a song which has a nice meaning so that it will make it all the more special

Me and my OH have chosen Elton John's I guess thats why they call it the blues. People will probably think its a strange choice being about being seperated but as we work away from each other a lot it means a lot to us, the lyrics make sense if you actually listen to them. My OH is also concidering learning the hamonica part so he can do it live with the band - but Iguess this will break up the dance somewhat.

I think the song is really all your choice and something that matters to you.

Very good article BTW. I like that she pointed out songs were chosen for either their lyrics, a special meaning or memorable moment or just moves them. As a provider, I always take the first dance very seriously, making back up copies, buying the exact version requested etc. I'm just back from a two hour meeting with a couple that I am mixing two songs together for their first dance. Getting it exactly right is important in my opinion.

MrMini and I have NEVER danced together before [unless you count an improptu DnB session in our dining room the crazy animals we are]

Our fist dance is slow for about the first 10 bars and then it all goes a bit bonkers...there will be much jumping about ?

I'm going to be Cat Steven once we're married so we've chosen a Cat Stevens song for our first dance - Thinking 'Bout You - which I can't stop singing atm :-)

We know there's going to be jokes so we thought we'd get in there first lol
