first dance....what where and how when you have a smaller wedding

JHenson1234, 27 September, 2013 at 17:11 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi peeps,

We're having 50 guests day and night and didnt want a dj as numbers too small plus the guests and us dont like dancing enough to justify one.

So, we're looking at a small band - a duo who sing various stuff - slow, upbeat etc.

As the intention isnt to dance all night - (literally, a first dance will do and maybe one with my dad!) i really dont want a dance floor set up if possible as it will enevitably stay empty and look odd. the duo would be there to create an upbeat atmosphere and be something for the guests to look at and talk about rather than dance to.

It's a small very ornate manor house hotel with private use for us. The main lobby is very ornate - old brick archways etc and is all open plan with the wedding breakfast room leading off the back of it as well as the bar leading off to one side of it. The lobby will have a christmas tree in it as will the wedding breakfast room so both are beautiful and could be used by the duo for perform in.

I'm wondering whether to have the duo set up in the lobby rather than put them in the wedding breakfast room or whether to have them in the wedding breakfast room and leave the lobby/bar as quieter areas (there are sofas, comfy seats etc all over).

Because there is lots of comfy seating in the bar/lobby, I think the bar and lobby will be the main areas that guests will be in. I want the duo to be in the thick of it rather than just be music coming through the wall of the wedding breakfast room. In the alternative, the wedding breakfast room is large and the buffet and cake will be put in there with some of the tables and chairs from the wedding meal. That will still leave a large gap at one end - where they usually have the dance floor. That room does need music too as there will be people sitting in there due to the buffet and table & chairs being left. if it's not the due we can play ipod music.

so, what do you think? should i leave the lobby free for guests who want a bit of quiet (just have low ipod music playing in there and the bar) and have the duo perform in the wedding breakfast room with the buffet, or, should i have them in the lobby and leave the room with the buffet quiet (ipod music playing on low) to encourage people to come out of that room and mingle (it's a small wedding so i dont want it to end up looking sparce!)

I did wonder if the duo could play in the wedding breakfast room (with a dance floor) purely for the first dance and then move into the lobby after their first set to get more involved?

its so confusing and i've no idea which will work better ; /

I would go with this idea. The thought of the two of them in a bigger, more open room, singing with no one in there won't be good. People will want to enjoy them and the bar is always a busy place.

We're having a small amount of guests as well but went for a dj, will be enough of them and enough alcohol for us all to enjoy it and still dance Smiley laugh

If I were you i'd go for them playing in the breakfast room with the buffet..if that's where theres room to dance people will want to be there, have something to eat, have a few drinks and get up for a dance Smiley smile

If guests want some peace or to chat they can always go out to the lobby, if I have a right picture in my head haha!

We're having dj set up in a small reception room in servants quarters where the buffet will be, and theres a little room next door people can go and sit if they want peace and quiet and they can go out to the gardens for a smoke / fresh air etc, I worried about small numbers and our co ordinators assured us they have that a lot of weddings the same and that it won't look empty so try not to worry i'm sure it won't look bare and it'll all be fine, your venue might be able to advise you better on whats the norm thing for smaller weddings and how it'll look best!

I would have them in the lobby, being a duo they'll purely be background music anyway and possibly not loud enough to be a focal point, also from a performing perspective it would be much warmer to perfom in a bustling (ish) room rather than a room where people will be dipping in and out of the buffet

The duo in the wedding room could work well - as you say they can move to the lobby afterwards.

We're having a lot less guests (20 in total - we're going abroad) and we are having a dj which I am now nervous about. It's only 4 weeks away so I think I'm just nervous about everything lol.

    xx
