First day of dress shopping **FLASH**

wonky, 21 December, 2010 at 10:13 Posted on Planning 0 19

Well, I finally did it! I have not been looking forward to dress shopping at all as when I looked at pictures of dresses I couldn't see myself in any of them and had no idea what sort of dress I wanted or what would suit me.

I went to two shops and picked out about 5/6 dresses in both to try on. The first shop I tried on a range of different ones (A line, fishtail, floaty fabrics, satin, taffeta etc) which I think really helped. Two dresses in the first shop stood out. Then went to another shop where one stood out. It turns out most of the ones I picked out to try were Maggies (I didn't know this until afterwards) but the one I can't stop thinking about is a Sophia Tolli dress.

Hmm, can't seem to figure out how to put pictures in (haven't done it before).

The dress that I think is my number one at the moment is http://sophiatolli.com/item/?i=Y21053&collection=Sophia

I'll see if I can figure out this picture thing and flash it and the others properly in a minute.

A question though, what feeling did you get when you tried on the dress you have bought? I loved this dress, didn't want to take it off, tried it on three times whilst I was in the shop and couldn't stop staring at the detail sparkling in the lights. I have thought about it ever since leaving the shop, even dreamt about it last night 😃 does that make it 'the one'? My best friend and Mum were with me and they loved it too. None of us burst out crying or anything but actually I don't think I would do that anyway, instead I just got incredibly excited and wanted to get married the next day in it.

I think I should still go and look in a few other shops though shouldn't I? Just to make sure?

Arrgghhh, I am so bad at decisions.

Beautiful dress hun, really really lovely. I think if you feel like that your may well have found YOUR dress! That's exactly how I felt, and still feel, about mine. I only felt it with the one dress and haven't changed my mind. I think dress wobbles are pretty normal. Why not go back again in a week or so, try it on again, and if you feel the same it may well be decision made!

That dress is beautiful! I love the detailing on the bodice! Its a gorgeous shape!

I didnt cry or anything but as i strutted around the shop I just felt like it was me & had all that i was after - BIG, gathering tucks, sparkle...

However I never tried on any organza fairytale dresses & sometimes I think I should have, just to see...but I am confident in my dress & i love it & i felt just so wonderful in it but I think your only doin this once & you should try on plenty!

Now I went to 4 shops & tried on around 5 in each - and a maggie dress made me go wow, thats me, but by time i went back ( nearly a yr later!) it was discontinued but she had another similar but more if that makes sense so that was my decision made for me!

So i think dont get too hung up on the idea of the 'one' - just try on plenty to know what style, material etc you are after - but dont try on too many & drive yourself demented with choice if that makes sense?

It is a beautiful dress and well done for finding something that you like so much! I am like you (very bad at making decisions) and my recommendation is to try a few more on just to be sure. I found that every dress I tried on I was comparing to one I tried on previously and I even said that I was 'trying to find reasons to like this one more as it was so much cheaper' lol. That's when we all realised that I had already decided whoch one I wanted (hope that makes sense?) The only thing I would point out to you about the dress you like (which would be a downside to me but not everyone) is that it only comes in a zip back, which for me wasn't any good as I have already lost 2 stone and am still trying to lose more. A zip back wouldn't allow as much flexibility with weight so for me t had to be a lace up......

I agree with Allgold if thats how you felt and are still thinking about that dress then it is the one. Mine was the first one i tried on and I would have happily not tried on any more however I was with my mum and she had travelled a long way so I valiantly tried on a couple more.

    Thanks ladies ?

I am quite tall (5ft 10) and have a really long body so A line dresses definitley suited me best and I loved this dress because of the amount of detail on the body. The pleating on the bust also makes my small boobs look bigger ?

I will definitely go back and try it on again soon and might go to a few other shops to try others on as I think the more I have tried on the more I will know if it is 'the one' when I try it again. I also liked the shop I tried it on in, staff were lovely and a friend of mine recently got her bridesmaids dresses from there and had great service from them.

May2be - this was the only dress I tried on with a zip back, all others were lace up (if that's the right term - ha ha).

I am lucky in that I have been the same shape/size for about 10 years now and don't plan on changing that. I am a size 10 on top (12 ish on bottom) and the dresses I tried on were a twelve. With this dress they were able to pin it in tighter really well so I could see what it would be like fitted. The dresses were perfect in length too (with a 3 inch heel shoe) so in terms of alterations the ladies in the shops said I would probably just need a it taking in at the bust.

One of the reasons I loved the zip is it means the detail on the body, both the pleating and the sparkly bits actually goe all the way around the back of the dress too (can't find any pics of this though). It looked amazing witha veil too, which I hadn't thought I wanted.

Ha ha, can you see what I mean ... I can't stop gushing about it. ?

All excellent advice though, I will definitely look at some more, hopefully just to solidify my love of this one. Which is similar to what I did with my venue!

    Thanks again.

Your dress is lovely SaSaSi and I think it is even better than your original choice! I tried on a similar one to Tiffany in the puff ball skirt, which was Annalise [View:http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?keywordText=anna&keywordType=any&page=0&pageSize=15&style=A3427B:550:0] But I have a larger chest and this dress naturally sits quite low so was no good for me Smiley sad Absolutely loved the skirt though cos it is so modern. Eventually decided on an iconic Maggie instead...

Wow Wonky, it's a stunning dress! I love the detailing and the pleating around the bustline. Beautiful!

Sounds like you have fallen in love with it and it seems like "The One". If you want to go to another shop and try on a few more, do it! If you still keep thinking about the Sophia Tolli dress then I think you'll 100% know it's the one.

It's really gorgeous and sounds as though you have a fab figure for it! And I know what you mean with the detailing going all the way round with a zip up dress, that's what I had and the detailing went right round the back. I had a few buttons over the zip so it looked like it buttoned up.

I tried that dress on too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's superb!!!! I loved it but it didn't suit my figure so well so i went for a Ronald Joyce.

But I must admit, the dress i bought was the first I tried on, the first about which I got the feelings you describe!

Em - that dress is beautiful. I know what you mean about wanting something 'big' but at the end of the day you have to go for something that feels great when it is on. I tried on a few bigger dresses and I just felt like an idiot in them ☹️ but this one gives me the feeling of having a dress which isn't an everday style or shape, but without being too huge.

Viking princess - wow, its nice to see someone else who has seen it in the flesh. I think I saw your flash recently and said how much I loved you dress and asked you who it was by (may be thinking of someone else). But if it was you that was the first time I had seen a flash of a dress that I loved and it really made me perk up about dress shopping myself. We obviously have very similar taste!

Glad you had such a positive first shopping experience! And the dress you like is stunning, I can see why.

The way you feel about it is the exact way I felt when I tried my dress (which happened to be the first one I tried). I went to 3 other shops after because I couldn't work out if I felt that way just because it was the first dress I tried or if it was 'the one'. The other shopping experiences just confirmed to me that the original dress was the one! So I agree, it is good advice to try a few more dresses if you want to confirm your thoughts.

And I hope VP flashes her dress again - always enjoy seeing it!!

Its a beautifull dress and I felt just the way you did. I do regret not looking round a bit more too be honest, just for the experience of it but then I do feel after I would have gone for the dress i have anyway! Or something very similar anyway. Its great you have found a style you like as like you say its hard at first imagining it what will you suit you. I found I didnt go for the style i thought I would! x
