First Dress Appointment tomorrow!

JenniferRFC, 17 August, 2012 at 12:47 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie although I've been lurking about for a few weeks since I booked my date (3rd Aug 2013).

I have my first dress appointment tomorrow and since I've never set foot in a bridal shop before, I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me. I'll be going on my own as my bestie is away this weekend and I live on the other side of the country from my family (and from the wedding venue!!). Is it unusual to go on your own?

I've no idea what to expect so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Jennifer, congratulations on setting your date!

From my experience, when you go in, they give you little tags and you can go round and tag the dresses you like - they then collect up all the dresses you have selected and off you go to the changing rooms with the assistant.

I would recommend trying on styles that you might not consider to be what you want, as I have ended up getting something very different from what I thought I wanted!

    Above all, enjoy it! x

Try on a range of styles (even if you dont think you'll like them), be vocal about what you like and dont like about dresses you are trying on so the assistant can guide you, if you have any or know what heal height you will wear take shoes, white undies, strapless bra (but i didnt really use it as most dresses have support anyway), wear a bit of make and do you hair so you see yourself looking kind of how you want to look to give you an idea, be clear about your budget and most of all dont feel pressured.

    Most of all HAVE FUN!!

I had very mixed experiences but i would say try on a good range of dresses, even if you don't think you will like it, it's always good to discount styles. Wear big (but nice) undies and just try and relax. Enjoy!

I would agree with what most people have said...try on a range of styles...then you find out what you like/suits and what doesn't. What i thought would have been my 'dream dress' wasn't my favourite when i put it on. My mum had picked a dress that I only fitted on to please her and I really liked it...although i didnt go for that dress...my dress is a similar style!!

Don't get stressed about it and make sure that you have lots of FUN!! ? xoxo

I don't know if it's unusual to go on your own, but I did most on my own and no-one in the shops looked surprised or anything. I think it's probably easier for them if there aren't four over-excited BMs/Mums/etc "helping"! So don't worry about that in the least. In fact I think it's easier on your own.

Don't expect too much first time... it might just feel weird/surreal/emotional trying on wedding dresses and you may not actually make much progress in working out what sort you like!

My experiences varied. In one shop you couldn't even browse - they asked what sorts you liked, found some, and then narrowed it down from there (didn't like that). In most others you could look around, and they suggest you choose about four you like to start with. Then if there's time, you can try more on after that. In one shop I had to go back a second time to get through all the ones I wanted to try. They were generally helpful re eg sticking to the budget I'd given and not pressing me to even try on dresses I couldn't afford...

Above all, just try and enjoy the experience!

I don't think it will be weird going on your own - at least you will be able to form your own opinions on what you like and not be influenced by others. I had my mum with me when I picked the dress but have gone to all my fittings on my own. Like you my family and my venue are all miles away!!

    Hope you have fun!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions everyone. It didn't even occur to me to take a strapless bra so I'll be doing that.

Really nervous but excited too. I shall let you know how it goes.
