First fitting...grrrrr

Soybean, 15 January, 2011 at 10:32 Posted on Planning 0 6

Well not a fantastic experience.? Having been measured to within an inch of my life when I ordered the dress for some reason I presumed the dress which took 7 months to come would actually be made for me? Well apparently not. Not sure how true this, but apparently no supplier makes to measure, the only reason they take your measurements is so they know what size to order. So unless you are a perfect, whatever that size happens to be you will always need alterations. The dress was hanging off my boobs and bearing in mind they are 44DD's that is no mean feat! and too tight round my backside.

So needless to say I was a little disappointed and worried then that it would be alright for the wedding. Also having been told not to wear underwear when I chose the dress, as it is coresetted, the seamstress asked me why I wasn't wearing a 'torsolette' (new word for my vocabulary). I told her I was advised not too to which she replied 'of course you do my dear that is what gives you the shape!' So now £160 for alterations plus £110 for underwear, lovely...

    Hiya

Not the same thing i know but i was told the same thing with my Bridesmaid dresses .. i assumed that they would be made to order but Nope that would be to simple lol , i have to wait to April then get them altered ( wedding in May!)

That does seem a lot or the alterations tho My shop has a cap on the amount you pay which i think/hope is £50.... seems that the shops try every way they can to squeeze money from us B2B's !!

Im sure it will all be fine and you will look beautiful on the day xxx

Im the same with the bra thing, when i went trying on the woman said your better having no bra on as they are all fitted, she said it will look better without a bra. So i wouldnt listen to any of them. Maybe you should try the dress on without a bra then with one ( just one you already have ) and see what you think looks better.

A torsolette is kind of a cross between a bustier and a corset. It covers the body from the chest to the waist, and is much lighter than a corset, not being designed to truly cinch in the body, but rather to highlight and conform to its curves.

That's poor on the part of your dress shop, they should have told you that the dress wasn't made to measure. To be honest I don't understand why they can't make to measure - presumably they make each dress to order so why not make to measure as well!

Alterations can be horribly expensive too unfortunately ☹️ Mine are going to be over £100 in the end for my dress, I expect (dressmaker is taking up both my dress and my petticoat and removing some of the netting from the dress and adding straps), and my bridesmaids are coming in at around £35 each for taking up/in and adding straps. Very bad that your dress shop didn't tell you - it's not the kind of money people can just pull out of no where!

My first fitting, despite knowing all of this, was still a bit of a let-down, but I think it can often be like that if you've built up a memory of how you look in a particular dress and then the real one may not be quite perfect on the first fitting. You will get it sorted though and look beautiful I'm sure!! xx

    Hi

Apprantly they take your measurements then order the size closet to you so yes they always have to be altered! We wernt even told how much the alterations were and that they wouldnt included in the price so we had thought we had paid for my dress only to be given almost a £200 alterations charge! But what I found out was thay they took my measurements and ordered at least one size bigger so they could make more on the alterations (I only know as my friends friend works there)

As Annah said Im sure it will be fitted to you and youll look stunning!! ?

    x

Edited to add Im sure that doesnt happen in every shop!

When i got measure they did seem to measure every part of me then said that they would order the dress in the size to fit my biggest part which is my boobs and that it will be big every where else but thats what will be taken in. it was a shock to me and my CBM when she said she was ordering our dresses in a size 4 times bigger than we are and 5 in CBM case!!
