Fish Pedicures Warning

*porsche*, 18 October, 2011 at 14:05 Posted on Planning 0 11

Not a big fan anyway but just thought I'd let you know there is now a warning for these places, saying they are proving very unhygienic, it was on the radio this morning and they are asking all people with diabetes or weak immune systems to completely avoid them.

This report is a complete loasd of b0ll0cks! It's basically scaremongering on tha back of an American report. There is virtually no risk for healthy people who visit a reputable spa, the risk comes from the high street franchises who'll take anyone and don't look after their facility or their fish.

There is really tiny risk of catching a verruca, athlete's foot or a fungal nail infection, but a good spa will 'rest' any tank that has just been used so that the filters can work and the fish rest, thus reducing the risk of cross infection. Anyone who has an open wound, verruca or fungal infection should be refused by the spa staff anyway. The risk of catching something from a fish spa is less than catching something from trying on shoes in a shoe shop without socks.

As fro HIV and HepC - these viruses cannot survive outside the body for more than a few minutes, and the likelihood of contracting them from a tank of water - with or without fish - is so absolutely microscopic.

If someone said manicures were dangerous would you have the same reaction? Manicures carry a similar risk in terms of probability and severity - both virtually negligable for a fit healthy person.

The thought of my feet being eaten by fish creeps me out anyway! *shudder*

    Chill out Jude,

I'm only posting what a reputable radio station is reporting in their news bulletin at the moment. I do believe there is a risk and that's why many of them are closing down.

Not sure how you can compare it to a manicure tho.

The treatment was originally designed for psoriasis sufferers. It seems to have taken an alternative direction with pedicures.....

Pirahnas might be a fast track treatment......

I'm not a fan either! Have always thought this procedure is foul. I personally think it is unhygienic. Also wonder if the people who think it's ok can say what will happen to all the poor fish once this fad dies out?! ☹️

I go once a month as I run a lot which causes callouses. My feet are always unbelievably soft afterwards and the fish seem quite happy.

I don't believe this report one little bit

My Mam has psoriasis and she was actually sent to one of these places by her Doctor.

Diabetic people are supposed to avoid most things to do with their feet anyways, my family who are diabetic aren't even allowed to cut their own toenails so I can see why you wouldn't want fish chomping on your feet

Yet again health and safety gone mad. ?

I had my first session a few weeks ago - toook mum for some girli pampering and whilst I didn't think it made a great difference to my feet - or my psoriasis it was great fun. Mum actually wondered if they could nibble off other bits of unwanted flesh - easier than a gym session lol Smiley smile

If there were so many concerns about these places then they wouldn't be open in the first place - H&S would have had them shut down before now.

If you go to a reputable salon they check over your feet to make sure there are no cuts, foot issues (verrucas/athletes foot etc) or other issues before you have the treatment. You are also required to thoroughly wash your feet beforehand. They don't just let anyone in to dip their feet straight in the tank.

The articles in the paper and this radio interview are just jumping on the bandwagon of one report - I'd be curious to know if the OP has ever had this done to be "warning" everyone about it?

    x

PS. I'd like to point out I've only had it done once myself and this is because of the cost of it....not because I wasn't impressed etc.

Aww i love a fish pedicure, have had it done many times. I have never seen so much as a flake of skin or scum floating in the tank, and rest assured the fish love it.

Its what they do. They would all go hide at the bottom if they didnt want to eat ur feet!
