*Flash* DIY Side tiara

Red Kite, 14 September, 2013 at 20:01 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hello,

I have been looking around at tiaras/headbands for a while and found that all the designs I liked were out of my price range. I also wanted something a little bit different.

I decided I would have a go at making my own tiara based on some designs I drew up. I've taken a few photographs of the process so this post will be a bit flash heavy!

To start I brought all the materials - total cost about £20-25. The most expensive parts were the keshi pearls - whichlook like 'squashed' pearls (not the scientific description). I also brought several brooches from the lovely 3D jewellery - who I should add has SUPER fast postage. The brooches were perfect and I used one as the centre piece for this tiara with a few alterations. I also incorporated a lot of old watch parts - cogs and wheels, which is a nod to my mechanical degree. The other pearls are either imitation or came from an old necklace I took apart.

All the bits

I choose the smaller brooch and wired the keshi pearls around it to make it look like a flower

Centre is the brooch from 3D jewellery with the keshi pearls around it.

The finished product on my bed and then on my head! I've tried to keep my face out of shot so sorry for the poor pose.

Detail

Lighting is a bit odd here. I'm really please with it - realise it wont be everyone's cup of tea though!

That looks fab and I love the fact that you've made it so personal by including the cogs and wheels. I'm finding it quite hard to find a hair piece that I love in gold as most are in silver - I'd follow your lead but I can't imagine it being all that easy. Well done Red Kite - you've done an amazing job!

Thank you everyone! [:-)] I promise it didn't take much skill! More a case of just stringing all the components together. There were quite a few times when I added parts and then changed my mind and took them off again. Oh and I agree it's tough to find gold accessories. Even just getting the headband was tricky as they're easier to get in silver. I've since found most hobby craft stores stock gold ones.

hehe yes I must admit it does have a steampunk vibe. I do quite like the Victorian/science fusion thing that influences steampunk and like seeing people's costumes but the look would be too much for me so until this project I've just admired from afar!
