Flash me your garters

kharding2014, 29 May, 2014 at 10:39 Posted on Planning 0 24

I'm toying with the idea of having a garter. I'm not doing a lot of the traditional things so I thought I wouldn't bother with a garter but now I'm thinking it's another pretty that I could buy :-)

please could you flash me your garters for some inspiration! Please could you also let me know how much they roughly cost as I have no idea.

I really wanted to wear my mum's but, as I've mentioned in other threads, last time I tried it it wouldn't fit over my chunky thigh. I plan to try it again in a couple months when I've lost some more weight, and if it still isn't right I'm probably gonna go with this. It's £9 from an etsy shop called Wedding Luxury.

That's really pretty. My biggest worry with garters is that it will fall down when I'm walking down the isle and then ill trip over it :-/

I don't think I'll be having one, or if I do I'll have to have one made - my thighs are too skinny. What's the whole idea behind a garter?

    This is mine...

It cost me £13.28 including postage and I got it from Etsy ;-)

It came with some double sided tape stuff to help keep it in place so hopefully that works! ;-)

I just googled and it's something to do with the groom taking it off and tossing it to the guests for good luck. There is no way on earth I will be letting that happen!

The garter toss is more of an American tradition. If you buy one from a US seller, it's likely you'll get two - one to keep and a second one for the groom to toss to the umarried male guests.

ETA: In the Middle Ages, it was customary for the family of the bride and groom to accompany the newlyweds to their wedding bed to ensure the couple properly consummated their vows, and as a symbol of this confirmation, took the bride's garter.

This is mine, going traditional and using it for my something blue, although reading previous we won't be going THAT traditional lol. I got it from personalised gifts4u2 on ebay & cost about £12.

Aw it's the one thing I've not got a flash of! I got one made in the colours of MF's footie team in vintage ribbon and lace. The seller made a rosette on the front specifically so I can add an old pin badge of the team crest to it. I'm definaely not wearing it during the wedding though, it will be so uncomfy! I'll pack it in my overnight bag for the hotel (then forget about it probably). It's quite different to anything I've seen so I'll take a pic for you all!

I was thinking of trying to take a picture of it on and text it to MF the morning of the wedding, but could be risky!

This is mine. It's J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams, cost £14.50 and although I wasn't planning on having one it ties in with the colour scheme of my wedding so well I had to have it. It's more ivory and sparkly than it looks in the picture and if this isn't TMI also matches my underwear (also Jasper Conran).

Not sure Mrs DeeBee will get to throw it though!!!

Ooh dilemma central. I can't decide what to do about this.

I really really want a garter in my (Welsh) family tartan because a.) the tartan itself is smart, I love the colour combo even if it matches nothing to do with my wedding b.) I like the symbolism of it without going so far as having a bedding ceremony/ tossing and c.) it could quite easily be my sister's something borrowed if she gets married. Oh and d.) I've just always liked the idea!

However, they are PRICEY at £25, so I may just get a more reasonably priced one as my something blue.

    Garter in standard website colour:

    My lovely Welsh family tartan:

If I go with something blue, I love this on Etsy to tie in with my Art deco bits and bobs elsewhere:

And my girls really really want hip flask garters because there aren't any pockets in their dresses, and it *will* be December!

OH is a big fan of Marvel and DC comics, so I'm thinking of something like one of these. These two are IronMan, but I might go for Batman or Superman instead if I can find the fabric (I'm planning on making them myself)

    I have made my garter and had lots of material left over so ended up making loads of these;

They have silicone strips so they don't slip down and there are some small ones for skinny legs, if anyone is interested please pm me.

I did fall in love with a blue tulle one by the Wedding Garter Company but I wasn't willing to pay the £48 price tag. I've settled for this one from eBay which was a far more reasonable £11.49 (including postage)

I would love a garter but having a short dress I think it will look super slutty as it would obviously be on display... might get on for the night party though when ive had a few drinks and no longer care lol

this is NOT the dress im wearing as im going custom but its about the right length to give an idea of why a garter probably will look slutty:

I can confirm that Aly's garters are not only beautiful but sit comfortably and don't slide - I have one ? and I wore it for my boudoir shoot last week and will definitely be wearing it on the day
