Flash me your kitchens please

Mrs Monkey, 4 January, 2014 at 19:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 39

When we got married we asked for money towards a new kitchen and now Christmas is over I'm starting to think a bit more seriously about it. I'm not 100% sure what I want though.

I'd love you all to post flashes of your kitchens please - I really need the inspiration. Especially if you have a black worktop and floor but with wooden cupboards (I usually see it with white cupboards) We won't be getting all new appliances so we will still have a white washing machine and fridge/freezer. I'm hoping some of you have white appliances with wooden cupboards and that it looks fine together (we currently have a white kitchen)

Great idea. That sounds like just the kind of kitchen l am thinking we should go for. If we have a small house fire or win the lottery then we l will be able to use my inspiration sooner rather than later!

Thanks Funky and Nutella - that's pretty much the style I was picturing in my mind. It's nice to see it doesn't make the kitchen too dark with black and wood (I didn't think about having white tiles, which may help my white appliances fit in a bit better)

Don't worry if you think your kitchen is crappy - it's just to give me ideas and and colour inspiration. I won't judge.

I don't really need knicker flashes thanks ?

Here's mine whilst the flooring was being replaced, I love the tiles but they're so hard to clean, wish I had gone for a smoother surface

Can't flash my current one as I don't have a picture, and its old and crappy! Our kitchen in the flat had a dark wood work top and white units. Appliances were also white. When we redo ours in the house it will probably be the same, wood top, white or cream units. I want to have some integrated appliances though as I hate not having a nice streamlined look in the kitchen! Mr C doesn't get this.

This is my teeny tiny kitchen...we didn't do this, it was done by the people before us. We were just very lucky that we both like it (sorry for the rotated pics, no idea why!)

That's actually a photo I stole off the net of a neighboring flat that's currently advertised for let as my kitchen was a mess at time of posting mine definitely doesn't look that shiny ? but ours is identical apart from that.

Yes it is an induction hob and I HATE it. I have always had gas before.

It just doesn't get hot enough which gives me the rage too, its impossible to brown anything to a decent standard.

This is ours, although the worktop is more cluttered (this pic is from estate agent when we bought the house in October) There is another small bit by the fridge freezer but not in these pics.oh, and our washer and dishwasher are both silver

I can only find photos from the property listing for some reason in my phone, here us one of the kitchen but mainly focused on cat:

Doesn't really tell you anything. Except that we like cheap takeaway pizza and that our cat is obese.

Ours.... pinched from right move. It usually looks very messy! We hide all the appliances behind cupboard doors.

Wow Twiga - I LOVE LOVE LOVE your kitchen! I have serious kitchen envy.

We have just moved and ours is horrid. The actual cupboards aren't that bad but we have the cheapest white oven and sink and a crappy tap. It also has a really small amount of cupboard space for a relatively big room so I have no room for half the stuff that we had in our old house ?

Exactly the same here! Our new kitchen is at least 2-3 times bigger than our old one.

Not our current kitchen, but the one in the flat before we moved.

We had cream cupboards and black worktops. the appliances were chrome or silver. All in all nothing like what you want but i liked it anyway!

Thanks everyone - some great looking kitchens Smiley smile

Sorry to go on to something esle but regarding induction hobs, (as mentioned by Funky earlier), would you not recommend getting one? Does anyone else have one and like it? I was going to go for an induction hob - I've heard nothing but good things about them, how quick they heat up, electric costs less, it only heats the pan so it's safer then a ceramic hob.

Fitstly my understanding is that ceramic and induction hobs are one of the same thing 'ceramic' simply refers to the surface coating of an induction hob.

There are pros such as easy to clean and if space is limited you can use it as an additional work top when not in use.

although they do heat up quickly initially the ring will cut out when it reaches a certain temperature and back on to maintain the temperature. For this it is good at reheating or keeping food hot but because it cuts out I find pans don't get as hot as I would like which does make it more difficult to brown meat or cook steaks. I only ever find myself using a ring turned up to full heat regardless of what I am cooking.

They also only heat the pan at the point that is touching the ring it does not distribute heat evenly throughout a pan and considering most rings are general smaller than your average pan it is not ideal, frying eggs demonstrates this perfectly I could have a frying pan with 6 fried eggs 3 eggs could be completely cooked the 3 on the other side of the pan completely raw , so you keep having to alternate the cooking of the eggs by turning the pan.

This isnt our flat but I think its the one down stairs and ours is the same layout and size.

The kitchen is the same except we dont have tiles and the walls are a different colour

We still haven't moved in, but I love the kitchen in our new house. We were hoping to move in this week, but it's looking like it will be the end of the month.

I'm going to disagree with Funky, ceramic hobs and induction hobs aren't the same thing I don't think. Although they are both electric!

Ceramic I believe takes time to heat up and takes ages to cool down

Induction I think is instant heat which also cools instantly too.

I have no idea on the finer workings of it but know a lot of people rave about induction hobs.

Personally I'd always rather a gas hob but I believe induction is a good electric equivalent

This is mine, stolen from Zoopla from when previous owners were in it. It's not what I would choose if I was starting from scratch but it's nice enough.

Ceramic is an electric oven with a ceramic top. The electric ring heats the ceramic, which then heats the pan.

Induction has a ceramic top but it works by magnets. It directly heats the pan by moving magnets really quickly. This means it doesn't heat the ceramic top (unless it's on there a long time) It will only work with saucepans that a magnet will stick to. That's why it won't heat any of the pan that isn't on the ring. If you were to chop a frying pan in half it would only cook the egg on the pan and not the egg on the hob.

I don't know anyone who has one though so haven't seen them working.

My mum and dad have an induction hob. they really like it but the saucepans and frying pans etc that are compatible are expensive.

We improved our kitchen in 2010

previously the owner had a 70s style kitchen with orange tiles including a feature wall just of tiles and a migraine inducing yellow shade of paint there was also an old style larder that we knocked down to create a longer run of units and space to put the fridge freezer that previously had to live in a corner near the dinning table.

we went for cream magnet units and black tiles with red accessories (our living room has room accents). our appliances were bought new when we moved in and we'd spent quite a bit buying bosch brand so decided to keep them free standing (apart from the new hob and oven) and they are white so blended in with the units. we did consider oak coloured units at one point, but decided the white appliances would stand out too much. We also changed to the windows from the old style leaded diamond panes and that made the kitchen much brighter.

I would have liked a real wooden work top and real wood flooring but cost and maintenance meant we went for laminate. we don't have gas in our village so our cooker and oven are electric.
