Flashing your garter?

SaraPoppy, 12 August, 2014 at 10:24 Posted on Planning 0 14

Will you be flashing your garter? My nan has bought me one and she is insistent that I flash it! To be honest it wasn't something I had thought about and now I'm worried about it. I don't want to offend anyone! My fiancés family aren't really taken with me as it is, his mum called our wedding a 'show' so I'm making a lot of decisions with her in mind. Trying to please both sides is hard! Would you flash and risk upsetting the in-laws but make your nan happy? Apparently is traditional? Or is it a bit tacky?

I will be getting a picture with my photographer of my garter but not in front of my family. I dont think they need to see my legs and garter lol x

But it makes a nice funny photo flashing it with my partner :-)

I have never seen a garter flashing at a wedding before (in front of guests). Personally it's not something i'd do, but it's entirely up to you. If you are comfortable with it and want to please your nan, go for it. If it's not your thing, perhaps explain to her that it's not commonly the done thing now and it may upset in laws.

I've seen it in photos but not in front of guests... although I did go to a wedding where the bride and groom had their first dance and are Jive dancers. The bride was wearing stockings, which everyone got to know quite well by the end of the dance!

I saw one on facebook where she seemed to flash her garter in every other picture...and at one point she sat on a chair in the middle of the dancefloor while her new husband took it down with his teeth...

I felt it was a little unnecessary for a family event - I definitely don't want OH's grandmother seeing that!

I'm saving it for the bedroom...

I wont be flashing mine. Its for my hubby's eyes only! I recently saw a pucture of the bride taking the cake knife from her carter in front of ll the guests & cut the cake lol.

Personally I find it a little distasteful, but that's me, everyone is different. It's your wedding and you should do what you want! If your in-laws can't take you for who you are, tough. You're not marrying them anyway!

I think my nan means to flash it in a cheeky way. My husband will not be removing it with his teeth, haha! I'm terrified of saying my vows in front of everyone so the thought flashing scares me! I think I might just have pictures taken. That way the in-laws will never know and the 'show' can go on without a hitch!

So this is coming back now then is it. This "shot" died out about 15-20 years ago along with the bride pretending to push the broken down wedding car while the groom sits down doing nothing to help.

You could try and short change your gran and say you will do it - but push the garter down to just above the knee first.

Yup, I got married 25 years ago and on every photographer's list of "must have" photos was the flashing of the garter.

Needless to say, my thighs are not the same as they were back in 1990.....and so my willingness to show all and sundry would not be so apparent, even if it were still "the done thing".

Much thought has gone into my garter this time round, and much effort into getting my thighs slightly less wobbly so it doesn't cut in so much, haha, but it will be for one person to see only.....and that won't be my darling Nana....!!

I have such a cringy photo from my parents wedding of my mum with her foot up on the car flashing her garter and all the groomsmen peering over my dad's shoulder, urgh! The tog made them do it. I don't even know what a garter is for and don't plan on having one! Totally understand wanting to please your nan though. Like the suggestion of pushing it down a bit first, and maybe not having the photo in front of everyone! Sad to hear you don't get on with the future in laws too

I wasn't planning on having one either! It is a bit of an odd request especially from my nan! When I questioned the flash she did say to have the garter just above my knee. I think I might have to have a cheesy picture just to please her. There isn't actually an appropriate time during the wedding to flash anyway!

I think it is an "Americanism" that grooms have their best man tie their hands behind their back and then remove the bride's garter with his teeth. Then he tosses it to the single boys, a bit like the tradition of throwing a brides bouquet for the single girls. I think it would be quite fun! I don't think it is in bad taste if done well i.e. bride sat on chair with dress hitched up one side and garter just above knee.

Given that your nan is only suggesting a cheeky flash I think I would be inclined to do it, unless you yourself are uncomfortable with it. Stuff the in laws - they must be pretty uptight if they find a flash of garter offensive!

I've bought a garter (was only £1 in a presentation box!) ...because I wanted all the things you're supposed to have traditionally...but I have no idea what to do with it! Lol! I have visions of it falling down my leg in the church! (That;s one way of flashing it!)
