Have you looked at the R(andom) A(ct of) K(indness) group recently, I'm sitting chuckling away at some of the requests. It's like when people on freecycle ask for a new laptop or plasma tellybox.

So many people are asking for very sensible and good things such as off-cuts for a yarn, or buttons, or small food items, or charity knits, or patterns but in my insomnia fulled night, I've been reading loads on there. People have asked for...

2 skiens of Noro Silk.

A 1st edition Stephen King book (who would give that away? ?)

A spinning wheel.

iTunes gift card (any amount ?)

Tickets to football games

A particular knitting pattern (can't remember which, it sounded complicated) but ready knitted.

I could go on and on...

Also, can you please tell me Fannie's Fingering is a joke yarn name. ??

You have to admire the optimism/stupidity/rudeness (delete as applicable) of some people!

Is anyone's first thought when trying to offload some really expensive, saleable item "oh I'll just see if someone wants it for free before I go down the profitable route"

How are you feeling today Mrs M? I remember we chatted once on MSN, it was when I was living in North Wales (that was before I got too homesick and my - first - marriage went to pot!)

I bought some knitting needles and yarn yesterday - I'm going through a bit of a crafty phase - Mr Mwnci was both amused and bemused and kept asking whether I knew how to knit, he was even more amused by my "well, not yet" response. I'm currently watching some online video-tutorials!

How did you get into it? I'm fascinated!

Hooray, another recruited for the cause! I have a feeling it's like Hotel California though, you can come any time you like but you can never leave... Even if you aren't an active knitter, you're still a knitter! ?

I got into it thanks to Flissy on a January "I need a new hobby, any suggestions" thread. I've been doing it for less than two months but love it. I already have 41 balls of wool/yarn. Oops. ? Flissy gave posted some links to good sites, which I can dig out for you, if you like? I'm no expert by any means but happy to "pay it forward" ? Of the top of my head, I used videos on www.knittinghelp.com and YouTube to learn.

You must join Ravelry first and foremost, it's all "fiber arts" ? so includes things like spinning and crochet if you do that too. It's still in Beta but already has 300,000 registered users, it's such valuble resource and the best website I've ever been on in terms of functionality. It's like facebook for knitters. You need to request an invitation and I think they take about 4 days to arrive as it's still done manually.

I'm doing ok thanks Mwnci. ? We did chat on MSN and would love to again, if you still have my address? I lost all of my contacts when I had that MSN virus on my last laptop. How are you doing? How is The Moog?

I'm sure if I was looking to offload my valuable Stephen King first edition, the first thing I would do is scan lists online to find a random to give it to! I'm going to send off a couple of things to the RAK group as I like to keep in with good karma but I'm afraid it won't be silk. ?

Just having a nose on www.knittinghelp.com as we speak! I've had a look on videojug but the more tutorials I look at the more sure I can be that I'm doing it (sort of) correctly.

41 balls of wool/yarn in 2 months sounds like some good going - I'm sure you can never have too much, I might not mention to Mr Mwnci just how addictive it is! What have you made so far? I should imagine I shall be making a lot of wonky scarves to start with.

Some site recommendations or whatnot would be fab! I've just signed up for an invitation to Ravelry so in 5 days I shall be able to become a member, I like that - it makes me feel special "if you're not on the list you'r not getting in!" ? and I'm mildly fixated with Facebook so it sounds perfect! I'm pretty sure I could get hooked so I shall be submitting an application to your and Flissy's knitting clique (or possibly cult by the sounds of things) shortly. Smiley smile

Chatting on MSN would be cool, I'm always online (or at least it feels that way) if ever you want a natter. I'm on Facebook too - I'm friends with LouM (I've an unpronouncable but simple looking Welsh first name and Celtic/SW English surname)

I've found you on Facebook and added you, thanks! The Moog helped as it meant any other Welsh friends on Lou's friends list didn't get "Hi, it's Mrs Magic" messages from me. ?

Did you see my post on Lou's wall a few days ago? You'll love it too - Perfect remedies for dirty screens (edited link now)

I'll make you a list of sites a bit later on, there is one inparticularl that sells the cheapest yarns I've ever seen on their clearance page, even cheaper than acrylic from Poundstretcher. ? Yay for you joining Ravelry, see you there in 5 days! (I'm imaginatively named MrsMagic so seek me out ?), there really is so many features and I'm so glad Flissy let me in on the secret. There are a few Hitchers on there now, at least 6 I know of. We should really have our own little group over there.

That screen cleaner is so cute! I love the focussed look on pugs' faces when they're attempting to eat or lick really quickly. It almost makes me want to smear bacon on the patio door to make my own version.

I was contemplating a trip to Poundstretcher today to have a look for yarn, you may have saved me a trip, although I can never resist an opportunity to acquire paraphernalia for any new-found hobby or suchlike.

Look forward to seeing you on Ravelry and Facebook Smiley smile

Poundstretcher is all acrylic and it's definitely fine for it's purpose, particularly for say premature baby clothes. I bought all my first lot there and I'm using it for cardigans and hats but wouldn't use it for gifts as it doesn't feel that nice and I don't think I want to wear it. ? Apart from the expensive stuff, there is usually some acrylic but if it's not a nice one (aka pounstretcher ?) or a blend, it can feel really rough and feel almost squeaky <hurty teeth>?

I bought some wool from https://www.kempswoolshop.com/wool_specials.aspx and I got 14 balls for just over £10, including postage. That included 4 balls of Sirdar Toddler Aran, which is so beautifully soft. I'd guess it's about £40-50 worth of yarns.

Oooh that sounds bargainatious! In Aldi this week they have some knitting bits and bobs, I didn't have a good look though (and even if I had, I'm clueless anyway). I also saw someone knitting with broomstick handles in a book the other day - that quite intrigued me and also a finger knitting project on folksy

    Hello Knitters ?

I've made my fingers all hurty from doing too much at the weekend! First I made a little mouse out of fun fur stuff, then I cobbled together a very cool little robot toy based on a pattern that's on there and then I did a couple of squares for my "blanket" which is coming on slowly but surely! Last night I started learning a new cable pattern for a square for it too. I am a woman possessed!

Mwinci, you should definitely join the knitters dark side ? I'm also friends with Mrs M on there (don't really want to post my name here as it's basically my real one) but I'm in Leeds if that gives it away. I love the idea of having a hitchers group over there!

Mrs M, I am massively impressed with your stash and your progress! I'm going to have a look at that shop link now as although I have a bin bag full of yarn bequeathed from my Granny it's nearly all along the lines of poundstretcher acrylic ? As you say, it has it's uses but there's always room for some beautiful new stuff.

    Hello everyone. Another knitter here!

When I popped into my local Aldi store on Sunday, they had stacks of wool on sale there, which you might find of use (or add to a stash) - it seemed OK wool, but I didn't have my glasses on, so couldn't be 100% on the quality.

I'm currently (still) knitting a shawl for Camperbub which is blocks of double moss/stocking stitch - it's taking forever ...☹️

    Bequeathed from grannny. ? Bless.

Aren't you doing well with your cables HS? I'm impressed! I'm a bit possessed too!

I might pop into Aldi, thanks Campergirl! Are you on Ravelry too? I bet your shawl will be beautiful. ?

I've set up a group and have added the hitchers I know on there but the link is here http://www.ravelry.com/groups/hitched-ravelers for anyone else who would like to join. Only Ravelers can see the link but it's not a private group in the sense we can restrict who can see it within the site so don't post anything hugely private! I have clicked it to not show in Radar so hopefully that will buy us a little privacy! Projects and photos can be added to the group for us all to see! ?

I had a humungus stash of wool which I inherited from my Gran too,? so I finished off a patchwork blanket that my Gran and I started before she died. The Camper babies use it to snuggle on the sofa with me and watch TV.....

Yes, Mrs M, I am on Ravelry, so I'll join the group. I'll also post a photo of a big blanket I knitted for my kingsize bed which I adapted from a pattern for a pram blanket (well, I say adapted - I just knitted it on 7mm needles with Aran wool and just kept going and going)!

Hello ? I am a knitter too. I am currently in retirement as I knitted too many scarves at Christmas and got a bit fed up.

I got a lovely crochet book for my birthday, so I am yearning to have a go at that. In fact, I am tempted to not do any work today and just crochet instead ??

    Fannie's fingering-christ , have they no idea?!

I joined ravelry a while ago, but only just started really using it. There are some really nice patterns in bigger sizes which I'm really looking forward to trying.
Bizarrely though, I had to measure to get my size in inches and my chest and waist are exactly the same? I measured several times to make sure ?
Here's a pic, how can that be?

Of course it's ok for you all to join!

Zoe, Oxfam had two massive vases filled with knitting needles so perhaps if you do need to buy some, pre-loved from there could be the way to go? I bought one of these for 90p and it has US, UK and metric printed on it for you to measure needles in charity shops. Give the gauge to whoever can go to the shop with a note of what you are after. ?

This group is good for us ladies of a fuller figure - http://www.ravelry.com/groups/the-curvalicious-sisterhood

I've really no idea about sizes Ellena, I'm sorry! I'm sure one of these lovely girls will know though.

    I'm still ? at Fannie's Fingering!

Ellena you definitely look like you go in in the middle so I have no idea how your bust measurement can be the same as your waist (I know naff all about clothes making though)

Your dress is lush and I'm so jealous of your thin ankles, I have horrid chunky legs so can't wear skirts/dresses.

I started knitting today! I have absolutely nothing to show for it though, but I reckon I could have had a scarf by now if I didn't keep undoing it.

I've been meaning to join Ravelry for ages. I'm a complete novice knitter and could do with some simple ideas to start off with. Shall go and investigate.

Hi, I've been knitting since I was young, but am only really getting into it now. I have knitted a couple of things for Freya and James, the best one so far was a cable tanktop. I have joined the Ravelry group, but haven't really used the site much yet so need to have a proper look around.

Wow, it's cool to see all these knitters on hitched. I've not been knitting much at the moment due to having a million other things on but bridesmum and I are going yarn shopping at Easter so hopefully I'll get inspired.

Wooo! We have a group! Thankies to Mrs M for sorting that out!

Oh my!!! - the RAK requests? Yeah, you take my Noro Silk; I'll even throw in international postage! And a spinning wheel you say? Not a problem! Cheapskates ?

I can't use acrylic as the mere thought of it being within a 100m radius of my teeth makes sick rise up my throat...

BTW - a couple of knitting friends have made some fab things out of these books:
