Floor and fireplace in bedroom- WWYD?

Knownowt, 7 August, 2009 at 17:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Gargh, help me make a decision. Our bedroom currently has a (not v nice) brown carpet and an entirely minging 70s fireplace with huge hearth.

Should I:

1. replace fireplace, putting same size new slate hearth down (ie still oversized and a bit odd-looking) -cost £

2. replace fireplace, putting same size new slate hearth down AND put in gas fire- cost ££

3. replace fireplace, putting smaller hearth in, which will necessitate new carpet or (my choice) getting the floorboards done- cost £££

4. replace fireplace, putting smaller hearth in, which will necessitate new carpet or (my choice) getting the floorboards done AND put in gas fire- cost ££££

I am really struggling. If you have floorboards in your bedroom, how do you find it? Does anyone have a gas fire there?

It depends on loads of things, mostly how much you can afford and how long you intend staying in the house.

I'd go for the ££££ option if I could, because that's how I roll ?

If you can afford it do 4, if not 3 as you probably wouldnt be happy with the rest (I know I wouldnt!) having said that I dont know anyone with a fireplace that works in the bedroom

so maybe 3 is the best option......

I have floorboards at the moment and love it, never worried about cold floors in winter, you could always have a nice rug and I tend to think it looks better having floorboards with a fireplace....... but thats just me!

Saying all this I am moving house and having gorgeous carpets put in the bedroom but if it was a period place or had nice floorboards, i'd go that way.

WSophieM said, do the best you can afford because that way you're less likely to want to change it again in the future.

Unless your house is particularly old or draughty then I personally wouldn't bother with a gas fire on the basis that you probably won't use it. Can you see yourself going upstairs to put it on before bed or leaping out of bed in the morning to put it on before getting dressed?

So for me option 3 as having more useable floor space is always useful.

Thanks everyone. I'm tending towards option 4.

Thanks also for the noise reduction tip ?

No.3 would be my option. I don't think a fire would be used enough, unless perhaps your house is particularly cold or something, but I'm assuming you already have central heating.

I have had floorboards in a bedroom and it was very nice, not cold. We had a rug at the bottom of the bed but not at the sides.

    Is it a period house?

I think I'd go for option 3 too; I assume you'll be taking out the old gas fire and just leaving an open fireplace in this scenario, as I really don't think I would use a gas fire in the bedroom. However, if the room is cold and you really think you will, then go for 4: you may as well do everything you want to do at once- anything else is a false economy.

Unless your bedroom gets particularly cold I wouldn't bother with the fire so would go for Option 3.

Thanks. Yes, it's a Victorian house. I think I like the idea of the gas fire more for fun than warmth- it would be nice to lie in bed reading in the evening with a fire burning but we'd never bother having a real one, so gas seemed a good option. This is all part of my "spend more time in bed" campaign ?

Loving the idea of martial unpleasantness. is that like a martial art? ?

I would do three, because I doubt you'll use a fire that much in the bedroom. also MrF is perpetually too hot and kicks the duvet off, I can just imagine the reaction if I suggested we add a working fire into the mix.

(and thanks for noise control tip, we are about to move into a victorian house with floorboards throughout and yes, our bedroom is over the sitting room)
