Florida Honeymoons - after advice and recommendations please :)

NYE2012SparklyBride, 26 June, 2012 at 10:38 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hiya,

OH and I have spent ages trying to decide on a honeymoon destination - we've literally been all over the world in our minds. We keep coming back to the idea of Florida as we both love theme parks and there's also the pretty beaches in the South to go to. OH has never been and I have only been once 12 years ago so there would be lots for us to do.

Not sure where to start though in terms of where to stay and things we could do so wondering if anyone who is honeymooning in Florida can share their plans to inspire me?!

Thanks ladies xx

I haven't been but OH went with work recently.

    Places he went to:

    Fort Lauderdale - great beaches

Miami - expensive apparently. They watched a basketball game that was a good night out.

The Everglades - to see the alligators and wildlife on a 'fan' boat.

    The turtle hospital.

    Swimming with dolphins.

What surprised him was how far away things are from each other. Living in the UK we are spoilt as we can drive from one side to the other in 6 hours. But the above places were too far from Disney World to make it worth a day trip.

I have no idea if any of that helps. OH just says plan your visit well and stay in multiple locations to avoid the to-Ing and fro-Ing him and his colleagues did.

I'm honeymooning in Florida in September!

    Can't wait!

We've chosen to stay in the WDW Swan and Dolphin Resort as it's right in Epcot and you get all the benefits of being in a Disney hotel (particularly access to Disney transport for free) but it's a more 'adult' feeling hotel as the rooms aren't themed. I would definitely recommend you check it out.

For planning more generally - I can recommend the DisBoards - they have a specific section of the forum for weddings and honeymoons and Disney - the UK Trip Planning section of the forum is really helpful too.

We're fully booked and paid up now - Thomson have even upgraded our flights and put a 'surprise' in our room on arrival Smiley laugh

I go to Florida nearly every year (Not going on honeymoon though). The first thing I would say is to work out which parks you're going to.

If you're going to do Disney and Universal then a split stay might be your best bet. (Stay a week at Disney, a week in either I-Drive or a Universal hotel)

If not and you're ok with driving then you could find a Villa and could drive to both sets of parks.

If you are staying at Disney, make sure they know its your honeymoon and have it written on all your Disney dining reservations.

My main tip would be to buy your tickets before you go, we get a better deal on tickets here.

I agree with BV about Disboards Smiley smile You'll get some good planning tips from there

Oh yes! Definitely this. If you book your meals through the Disney system they call it 'adding a celebration' to your meal. It gets you a little freebie at the end, usually a cake on a plate where they've iced 'congratulations' or some appropriate message on to it Smiley laugh

Florida is one of my favourite places on earth! I took my OH there last year for his 30th and we both absolutely loved it! We didn't stay in a Disney hotel because it really is one of those places where you hardly spend any time at the hotel, so I didn't think it was worth the extra cash (although for your honeymoon you may want a bit of luxury!) We stayed in the Quality Suites, Lake Buena Vista and we literally woke up every morning, had breakfast and then were out until 12-1am everyday (shows and firework displays are usually on quite late). On down days when we wanted to relax a bit we went to the waterparks. The malls are amazing as is downtown Disney. We also went to Busch Gardens which is about 70 miles away. If you drive then it's definitely worth renting a car because of how far everything is, plus it gives you the flexibility to come and go as you please without having to be dictated by coach times. I would recommend getting a copy of Brits Guide to Orlando - very useful book and you get some discount coupons! Hope you have fun!! ?

Hiiii we are honeymooning October 1st in Florida! Starting with Orlando, parks shopping and eating, driving to Miami for a few nights to go dancing (we like a good night out) then ending with 5 days in the Florida Keys to chill!! I absolutely can't freaking wait! I love America and have not been for almost two years and it was always where we planned to go!

We have booked through Virgin and done the multicentre option where you can visit a number of places! H2b is unaware that I've upgraded our flights! Smiley smile

    Xx

    Hiya,

I have been to Florida many times as my H2B's parents have a holiday villa there. I would DEFINITELY recommend looking at villa's to rent, the prices are pretty good and the hire car prices are not too bad. You get the peace and quiet of being on your own and the ability to have meals at home.

Another must is Discovery Cove, the prices are pretty good and worth it even if you don't want to pay the extra to swim with dolphins. We went last year and didn't do the swim with dolphins but had a great day anyway, all the food and drink (including some alcohol) are included and you can swim with all the pretty fishes and stingrays (don't worry they are totally safe). You also get a 14 day ticket to Seaworld which is another must.

Finally, I would recommend Applebees as a fun place for dinner. Cheap food, 2 for 1 on drinks all day everyday pretty much and a good atmosphere.

    Have an amazing time!

ps. Second the mention for Busch Gardens earlier - best roller coasters in Florida! Ohhh and do the giraffe excursion as feeding giraffes is so much fun Smiley smile

Also try googling Orlando Informer... It's a really useful website for making the most of your trip, lots of seemingly good tips for avoiding queuing too long in the parks etc.

Im really hoping we can honeymoon in Florida, I'm desperate to go, H2B has been before, but I haven't.

I don't want to directly advertise on here but everyone is free to direct message me about a villa as my future parents in law do hire theirs out for holidays and it is beautiful!! Of course I am bound to say that but I can send a link to their site if anyone is interested Smiley smile

If you want to go to Disney, then you need to look at the yacht and beach club, really romantic location, in the best place on Disney property. Depending upon the time of year, you may also qualify for the free Disney dining plan. You have to stay in a flux Disney resort and purchase park tickets to get it free. Well worth the money. Away from Orlando then look at The gulf coast.

I would suggest you pay a visit to the Dibb where all of us Disney nuts hang out. Have you considered 1 week land based 1 week cruise. You can pick up a bargin cruise if you are prepared to wait. Have a look at vacations to go website for deep discounts on cruises. I have cruised with Disney and these are fab, for adults only as well as family's.

We have also chosen to go to Florida Oct 2013 after our wedding! We are definitely going to rent a car and drive to Miami and Florida Keys. I'm hoping to go somewhere really special hotel wise, even if it is just for one night! Some of the miami and gulf coast hotels look amazing. I've never been so will be keeping an eye on this thread ?
