Florist help!!

Celtic B, 21 April, 2012 at 14:46 Posted on Planning 0 9

I need some advice from you lovely ladies. Our florist didnt start off too well! It is a big company and when the florist first came down to see us she was very abrupt and rude. We told her we were looking for artificial flowers as 4 of the main party are hayfever sufferers (me, MOB, MOG, and BIL). To this we got told that this is highly unusual and she had been there 10 years and never known of artificial flowers being used for a wedding. She then proceded to remove all of the sample books from the tables as apparantly there was no point in us looking at them as artificial were much more expensive!! My MILTB then expained that 11 years ago her daughter had had artificial flowers from said co! This was just recieved with well I will have to go and ask if it is even possible.

As you can imagine we very nearly just got up and walked out. However she did come back (she had obviously been told it was perfectly possible and reasonable!) and took us round the shop, she was at this point quite helpful and enthusiastic so we decided to go on and see what happened. They emailed me a quote a few days after (interestingly the same sort of price as the fresh!!) and all seemed well.

A week or so ago I got a call from them the florist to say that they had ordered some roses but they had come in and she didnt think they were the colour we were looking for so could I come and check them. I tried to phone to book an appointment but no reply! I also emailed and got nothing! So I poped in there and the staff were very helpful (my florist not there that day) and showed them to me. They were bright white (my dress is ivory so I wanted ivory or cream) so I told her they were not suitable.

Yesterday I get a call from the florist to say I couldnt have the ones we origionally picked as they come in a mutli pack and the lady who ordered them wouldnt order enough for the bouquets. The ones I saw the previous day were apparantly the only other ones they could get! But apparantly I could source my own.

Personally I dont think the florist that is doing this wants to do the flowers at all. She is not helpfull and MILTB and I are more than happy to complain and get a new florist but do you think it will make much difference as it sounds like the other lady that orders them isnt that helpfull either?

I just feel a bit lost. Should I stick to my guns or go elsewhere?

Personally I'd go elsewhere if it's still possible! Obviously don't cancel them until finding another florist! The florist I've talked to has no problems using artificial flowers and in fact they are cheaper! Also a place I looked at for hiring centre pieces includes artificial or fresh flowers and again the artificial were cheaper.

I think I'd be tempted to try and find another florist if it's possible. They don't sound very interested x

I think shes probably just making it as difficult for you as she can as she obviously isnt interested in doing the flowers.

Have you thought about some of the other styles of boquet, button or jewel bouquets for examples as these are really on trend, can look fab and no hayfever issues either.

I would go elsewhere - I had this with the first florist I went to. Basically I had a tatty photo album given to me and left to get on with it. There were two girls in the shop who said that the manageress would be back soon. Sure enough she was back shortly but was not much better than the other two girls. I could have real or artificial but there was little difference between them pricewise. I left the shop and went home feeling really fed up.

In the meantime I had looked around on the internet and printed off pictures of flowers that I liked the look of. My daughter came up with another florist to try who had done the flowers for a friend of hers and she had been really good.

I had a look around her website before I went to see her and she was briliiant. She was showing me flowers in the shop that would be in season in our colour scheme - took note of my pictures - had suggestions for the flowergirls and didnt turn a hair when I said I did not want a huge shower bouquet but only a small bridesmaid size one. She pointed out the difficulties with having handtied flowers in some photos regarding the angle you pose them at where a shower works better and so on. She was superb - I will actually be having some artificial flower pomanders for the flowergirls and fresh flower wrist cosages for the bridesmaids and she said if the venue wedding organiser wants to contact her she will be able to coordinate all the flowers. (Our venue is decorating the rooms as part of the package so this is all great news!) All this was achieved without a tatty photo abum in sight!! as the florist said every wedding is different and individual.

Find someone you like that is preared to talk to you and discuss what you want - it makes a big difference!!

If I was you, I'd be looking to use another florist since you have obviously lost confidence in them.

    Good Luck.

    Hi Celtic B,

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your florist, I am suprised they said the artificial flowers would cost more than fresh flowers, do you have anywhere local to you who specialise in artificial flowers as it sounds as though they aren't as interested in your custom as they should be. If you would like any advise on artificial flowers, I'd be happy to help.

I'd go elsewhere, you really don't need this stress at this special time in your life!!!

As a side note, I booked real flowers, but in the end decided to change and go for artificial and the price DROPPED quite substanstially, keep that in mind x
