Flower budget

josephine, 6 March, 2013 at 22:45 Posted on Planning 0 15

My OH and I are having a but if a panic as costs mount up, and it all begins to spiral, so we are trying to anticipate how much it will all cost altogether. We can't do as much of making and creativity as we could to keep cosrs down, as my OH lives abroad, I live here and the month of the wedding I have to pack up our flat and get everything shipped off to storage. I have enough on my plate! (I get married in August)

Anyway I am finding it very difficult to come up with a ball-park estimate for flowers. I can;t get quotes easily as I live a couple of hundred miles away from the venue so i will not be getting them done down here. Can you tell me how much you spent on (real) flowers? I want a bouquet for myself, and a couple for the bridesmaids, plus a couple of button holes. I dont want exotic flowers - i'm not sure what, maybe sweet peask, maybe hydrangeas, maybe even sunflowers...

But please, how much did you spend?

What area is your venue as prices in London for example are generally higher then up north?

The good news is I believe August is quite a good month with a good selection of flowers in season!

The wedding is in Derbyshire and will probably find florist in Sheffield.

I haven't considered fake flowers. I can see the idea behind them - environmentally better, and they last, but not convinced I would like them. Where do you get them from?

Hi - You'll find that prices are cheaper in Sheffield than further South for sure. August is a good month for lots of availability but it's worth remembering that with fresh flowers it's not just which flowers you choose but which style you would like. Styles which take a long time to make with lots of intricate wiring work and use more flowers such as shower bouquets will cost more than something modern and minimalistic for example. A good way of keeping your budget down is to let your florist have a colour scheme, a list of flowers you definitely don't want and a maximum budget for each item. This way, she has much more lee-way to help you stay within budget if she has fewer restrictions.

Although I only do artificial flowers now, I had my own florists shop many years ago so I can give you a rough ball park figure of fresh flowers in Yorkshire. Obviously a lot depends on which flowers you choose but on average a shower bouquet (or teardrop, trailing, cascading bouquet as they are sometimes called) will be £80 - £120 mark. £80 for a medium size and £120 for a large one. Hand-tied bouquets in a fairly compact style between £55-£80. A lot of people think that hand-tieds work out cheaper but the compact designs use a lot of flowers so not as cheap as you may think. A modern, minimalistic or geometric style bouquet uses less flowers (but just as much design skill !) between £30 and £50. For bridesmaids, I usually advice spending as little as possible. If your budget is limited, then spend the bulk of it on your bouquet and your Groom's buttonhole as these are the photos you will be looking at for years to come and all eyes will be on you at the wedding. Obviously people will notice the bridesmaids but not as much as you two! A single flower with some striking foliage for the maids will cost around £10-£15. Buttonholes from £3 - £10 for a special one for the Groom, Ladies corsages £12 - £20 again depending on the flowers.

Artificial can work out slightly cheaper if you go for more exotic blooms such as orchids, lilies. There are prices on my website for artificial if that helps - thanks for the recommendation JoJo but I'm full this year till October I'm afraid.

    Hope that helps.

I am down south so may change prices. But i am getting married in August and having blue and pink hydrangea and ivory roses as a handtied and thats £60, bridesmaids having smaller version there £40, and buttonholes where £3.50.

including 8 centrepieces, top table flowers and mum corsages our flowers were £550 all together.

    Hope this helps.

I don't live anywhere near you so prices will probably be alot different, but all my quotes were similar.

For my bouquet, 2 bridesmaids, 8 buttonholes, 2 flower girls bouquets and 2 thank you bouquets for the mums we are paying 355. That's including delivery which I think was 10/20 pounds. The flowers are different types of roses, I can't find my quote at the moment to tell you what types. All other quotes were maybe 20 cheaper or expensive.

For our bridesmaids they are each having a wristlet, which is a pearl bracelet with a gerbera flower and a little green foliage on. The florist quouted us £15 each for those which I didnt think was too bad. Also easier as each of my BM's have a page boy to walk down the aisle :-)

Flowers don’t play a big part in my budget, would rather spend the money elsewhere and not a massive flower fan, so I have gone for the below ... they look really brilliant and I am going to add in some pearls and ribbon.

Hobby craft do buttonholes for £1.29 each.

Thanks all. That's really really useful information. I am not having floral centrepieces - well not from the florist. My mum is going to make alive ones, i think with herbs and heather in a pot which should look and smell lovely and we can take them home and they will live as well.

So I am giving £200 for flowers for me, 2 bridesmaids and 2 button holes. I only want a bouqet nothing big, so hopefully that should cover it!

    Thanks again, all

    Josephine
