Flower Etiquette

Hi Ladies,

Maybe you can help me, having a dispute with MIL2B about wedding flowers. We're having 5 button holes for the grroms party, my flowers & 3 BM's the BM dresses are a nice yellow so we're going to have yellow flowers for me and cream for the BM's and them MIL2B and Mum's corsages.

The main points are;

  • does the groom have a double button hole or can he have one thats the same but a different colour?
  • do all the flowers have to be the same type?
  • do the mums corsages match us or their outfit?

Basically I'm having artificial flowers and we've already bouight the BM's some like cream carnations, and I've found a lovely yellow cala lilly bouquet and matching button holes and they also have the button holes in cream, so I was thinking the grooms men have cream to match the BM or yellow to match me or vice versa for the groom (if you know what I mean) but the MIL2B was like "it's going to look like a flower shop with everyone in diff colours and flowers"!!! grrrrr so now I'm all in a funk and dont know what I want anymore Smiley sad

Thanks in advance ladies

    Generally the grooms button hole is a flower that has come from the bouquet. As far as I know not all the flowers have to be the same, but is generally a good idea to keep it so for all the BMs and MOH. As for the mothers corsage ... any way you want really. Traditionally it is to match their own outfit, but it is becoming common to just keep all the flowers the same for ease. Hope this helps.

    Well, to answer each individual point, the Groom normally has something just a little bit extra to the rest of the guys so he stands out as the 'groom'. Mum's corsages should in theory match their outfits rather than the wedding colour scheme otherwise it can spoil the look of their outfit. The bridal flowers don't necessarily have to be the same type but they should compliment each other so for example, personally I wouldn't put carnations with calla lilies - carnations are classed as everyday, pop in a vase flowers whereas calla lilies are more luxurious so by putting one with the other, it would cheapen the look of the callas if you see what I mean. Likewise country type flowers such as gypsophila, wouldn't look good with orchids as they aren't in the same league in the floral world. Cream and yellow do go well together and it is a lovely colour scheme - you could link the two together with a flower such as yellow freesia which is midway between the two. Hope that helps.

    You're welcome - that's what I'm here for! There are so many flowers, it can be a bit daunting when you first start planning. Hope my website gives you a few ideas of what goes with what etc.
