Flower help Please!!!!!

Mrs G to be, 7 February, 2011 at 15:21 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi All,

\i'm hoping someone can help me out a bit. My florist is so lovely and so helpful and all, but she doesnt seem to get what im asking. Basically, when I first saw her, I'd decided to have ivory roses for me and the bridesmaids were going to have ivory gerbera bouquet, as I was trying to keep a tight budget. But, we changed our mind and I decided (after some help from some lovely pics posted by Sherrie and you peeps) that I would try and add some colour to the BM bouquets, some purple and dusky pink as well as ivory, as my colour scheme is victorian lilac.

Now, I explained this to my florist, but, she keeps saying that if I added some colour of other types of flowers the bouquet wont have a "round" appearence, and also she's said it'll be really expensive. She said I could add some Gip, Ferntree, roses, gerberas, and another flower which has a purple edge (Sorry about spelling and names!) but doesnt seem to be giving a lot of options tbh.

So what Im asking is really, how can I put a BM bouquet together to incorporate a few of those colours that wouldnt cost the earth? What types of flowers etc? So I can go back to her again as I dont seem to be getting anywhere ?

I get the feeling she thinks you want round posies for your bridesmaids too and that by adding to them, this will in effect make them pretty much the same price as your bouquet.

You may be better going for something less formal such as a floral spray or a more minimalistic bouquet for your bridesmaids which would work out much cheaper. If you wanted ivory roses, you could have say 3 or 5 ivory roses with purple or ivory lisianthus with a purple edging added with some bear grass which would give you a staggered floral spray similar to this although these aren't your colours or flowers but you get the jist:-

Or something like this where the roses would be all on one level with the lisianthus or similar flowers in between:-

May be an idea for you to show her some photos or has she any she can show you? For something similar to these styles, you wouldn't be looking at much more than £30 in fresh flowers. Hope that helps.

If I remember this is the kind of colour & style you were looking for:

RF I think that must be what she's thinking, I'm not sure, but she said if it's not round they dont normally look very nice, but I dont agree really, i think they look just as nice. I like the 2nd bouquet you posted actually as that was the sort of thing I was thinking, just didnt know what sort of flowers I could go for but I do like those Lisianthus that you've mentioned especially if you can also get them in purple! Thanks so much!!

Sherrie - Those were the colours yes, thank you, how on earth did you remember ? xx

    I don't forget anything!

The topo bouquets both also have Lisianthus in them, you could ask her to add the bleached, dried Gypsophelia like in this Bouquet as it is not as bulky. Can't understand how she can't get a round shape with those flowers.

If you were thinking of the ivory roses for your bouquet, you could have the same for the bridesmaids and use either the lisianthus in between or freesia. That particular style of bouquet with the roses has 5 roses in so wouldn't cost the earth. A lot of florists think of posies as being all the same size but you can use a variation of the style to bring the price down quite considerably.

    Hi There,

Are you just asking for bouquets from her? in that case it is probably down to the wraps of flowers she will need to buy. Roses generally come in 20's altho there are more and more coming in 10's, lisi is in 10's, gerbera and germinis in 20's, but freesias are in 50's, she is probably counting the cost of the flowers she may not use, and so will be charging you for them.

As for them not being round, I would imagine this could be down to her skill level (although I hate saying that!) roses are quite robust and so can be fashioned into a dome of sorts without too many problems, freesisa, lisi, gerbera when added can be more tricky.

if you are not convinced, can you get a second opinion? if your florist is freelance, and you do just want bouquets, perhaps try a retail florist who will absorb the cost of the extra stems into the weeks stock (however her costs will probably be more due to her over heads)

    best wishes

    Zoe xx
