flower setback - needing to offload!

cambridgebride, 26 April, 2012 at 11:49 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi all

I've had a bit of a setback and am turning to the forum to offload - sorry if it all seems a bit self centred!

My aunt, who lives abroad and is a florist, was going to do all our wedding flowers. Unfortunately my cousin (her daughter, who is also the mother of the flowergirls and pageboy) has been taken ill and it looks like they are not going to be able to make it.Obviously the main concern is that my cousin is ok, thankfully the tests so far haven't shown anything serious. It's a real shame that I won't be having flowergirls and the pageboy (especially as I sent over the dresses so they could try them on and the photos my cousin sent are so cute!)

My problem now is that we didn't leave any room in the budget for flowers and table decorations as they were going to be a gift. I've rung round florists and I know they hike prices for weddings, but seemingly even more for late notice! We're having to seriously cut back elsewhere - cava instead of champagne for toasts, house wines instead of the ones we like, no canapes, and even then we can't afford flowers for our centrepieces so are looking at hiring fishbowls and having artificial flowers for my bouquet, the adult bridesmaids bouquets and the buttonholes.

I know these are all minor details in the grand scheme of things, and I shouldn't get upset about it, but I guess I just needed to write it all down as it's all quite stressful at this short notice, and look for reassurance that it's not going to affect the day....

Don't be upset love. Artificial flowers can be just as beautiful as real ones.

Brenda, who is Rainbow Wedding Flowers on here does some wonderful bouquets. She is making mine for me, plus all the extra bouquets/buttonholes/corsages.

These are what she is making for us:

As for your centrepieces there are lots of lovely things you can do without flowers. If you think fish bowls with artificial flowers might not be what you want, you can always save old glass jars and put candles and sand in them, and scatter petals around to add a bit of colour. They look fantastic in the evening.

Alternatively if you really want flowers you can get hydrangea heads from hobbycraft for £6 per flower (or elsewhere cheaper probably) but the head is huge, twice as big as my hand and you could get away with one or two of those in a vase/ fishbowl/ vintage jugs or teapots. Hydrangea offers a lot of flower for your money and look really good in silk. They sort of lend themselves to the fluffy look.

Thanks for your lovely message -think it's all just getting me down because it's being worried about my cousin, having to rearrange all the table plans as it will be 6 people now no longer coming, losing my pageboys/flowergirls and my flowers all in one go! I just have to tell myself to stop being silly...

    your flowers look beautiful!

    xx

I know, it must be upsetting but it will all come right in the end. I hope your cousin makes a full recovery x

I do hope your cousin makes a full recovery.

How far away is your wedding? I have no idea what I would do if a similar thing happened to me (we are 5 weeks of Saturday), but I THINK what I'd do is use it as an opportunity to do something different.

Unless you are dead set on having flowers (real or artificial) I'd be trying to think of thingsd I could make myself (or with help of friends and family). Could you make button buttonholes? Make fabric flowerr bouquets like Venart has done, or someone else made some fabulous artificial pomanders abnd posted abiout how she did it. In fact, doing a similar thing but with half domes of oasis could make wonderful centre pieces I think.

Do you have a theme for your day? that might help people come up withother cost effective ideas for your table centres etc.

    DM x

PS, I also have to say that in light of what is a pretty big drama quite close to the day, I think in calling it a setback you are being so calm! wekl done for keeping it together!

Yikes. of course you're upset, I would be too. How long do you have until the wedding? would it be safe to wait and see or is there no time for that?

I guess its also not nice thinking about maybe replacing the flower girls and page boy with someone elses kids perhaps but it might be an option?

also agree with dwc - you can find alternatives for the flowers - I'm only having a bouquet, 3 bm flowers and 10 buttonholes and that is less than £200. table arrangements can be very quirky and personal so maybe get your creative side out and think about what could be done instead!

    good luck pickle x

Hi cambridgebride I'm based in Suffolk and I do artificial table arrangements to hire out. Have a look at my website www.top-tables.co.uk and please feel free to email me if I can help. As a fellow hitcher, I'm sure I can help you out with the price too. I'm so sorry to hear about your situation, it's never nice to hear news like that x Kalie
