Flowers

Elphaba, 5 July, 2011 at 15:03 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hi

I wonder if any florists could help me. I have been quoted £28 for each of my bridesmaid bouquets (hand tied, 8 white avalanche roses) and £38 for mine. (The same but with approx 10 heads of purple listanthus). Is this a good deal or not? I was looked at wholesale prices and it seems like a lot for what it appears it would cost the florist (who is a friend of OH) but I may be missing something. I am getting married in Dec.

Yes, that's a very good deal. The cost of flowers rises quite considerably at the wholesalers leading up to Christmas and they tend to stay high until after Mothers' Day/Easter time. In addition to the cost of the flowers, there will be costs added on for her time, skill and overheads too. So definitely a good price. Hope that helps.

Thank you. Which flowers are cheaper around christmas? We are having budget issues!

There are a few which may work out cheaper than Avalanche such as Gerbera, Tiger Lily or Oriental Lily, Alstromeria, Carnations and Chrysanths. A lot of people dismiss carnations and chrysanths these days for weddings but there are some lovely button chrysanths which don't look anything like the run of the mill ones. The carnations are making a big comeback with all the new colours and varieties and are relatively inexpensive too. Lisianthus is good value so you should be OK there but unfortunately all flowers rise in price at Christmas due to demand for gifts and tribute flowers. You could make a bit of a saving by cutting down the roses in your bridesmaids from 8 to 3 and turning the posy style into a minimalistic style with some bold leaves and grass. Very striking but uses only a few flowers thus making a saving. If your bouquet is going to be compact, this can also be made less expensive by making it in a natural style by adding space in between the flowers and utilising leaves. If your wedding is during xmas week or holidays, a word of warning! Do double check that your florist is going to open. Every year, I get panic calls from Brides who have booked flowers for December only to find that at the last minute, the florist has said she was going to close for the holidays and left them in the lurch. Wholesale markets vary around the country but most close Christmas Eve and don't reopen until after the New year so no flowers are available or, if they are, they are pre-Christmas eve flowers which means they won't be at their best for a post Christmas wedding.

I think it sounds like a really good deal. I was quoted for white roses (although i'm not sure what type or how many) with listanthus and it was £70 for mine and £35 for the bridesmaids.
