Flowers, a question from a lost newbie!!

chocoholic_claire, 18 February, 2009 at 21:10 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi,

I'm new to all this wedding planning. My wedding will be in August next year, and I am starting to think about my flowers! My H2B and I are planning a blue theme, but I have no idea what kind of seasonal and affordable flowers would be an option! I've seen lots of lovely pics on google, but I've got no idea what the flowers are called, or if they are expensive! Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

Claire

Hmmm we are having blue as our theme but im settling for creams i'm afraid as that seemed the easier option, most blues are actually purples......tho there are many helpful florists here who will help you out and advise you.

welcome to hitched too by the way,

Thanks! I love the look of either hydrangeas or gerberas with delphiniums, but again have no idea how practical or expensive this is ?

You'll be ok with hydrangeas as they are in season in august. dark blue flowers can look quite recessive in pictures, so as long as you mix them up with something else you'll be fine. but then again, i'm not a florist! just the opinion of a humble hitcher!

    welcome to hitched btw ?

    Hello

'Blue' flowers which I would recommend and are in season in August would be; Delphinium, Hydrangea, Aconitum, Lavender (many different varieties available), pale blue limonium. Purple flowers to complement the blue could also be used such as; purple veronica or fressia which has a blue tone to it (Blue Bayou). I have also seen some roses dyed blue! Ask your local flower wholesaler/florist if they are available.

    Hope that helps!

I had cream hydrangea which I LOVED! I saved a couple of blue pics in my planning folder but as you can see "blue" varies alot and can look a bit lilac.

Will your BMs be in blue? If so, personally I'd stick with white/cream flowers for them and then maybe just a little bit of blue in your flowers so that if the blues don't match that well then it won't stand out too much but everything will tie in.

Others have posted some flowers that are in season... if you are having fresh they will be more expensive than silk flowers and like others have said shades are wide and varied as they are natural and some 'blue' flowers can look more purpley.

Silk flowers also offer more choice in colour tone and flowers available in blue.

However, if you are definately having fresh flowers you could go for ivory and contrast with any shade of blue ribbons & accessories which would look lovely.

I would suggest going into your local florists shops and asking to look at their past bridal flowers pictures and get quotes.

    Hope this helps

There's a great site by The Flower Council www.flowercouncil.org (I think..) but it's on Google anyway - they list all the flowers by colour, availability, and when they are at their best in season.

As someone quite rightly pointed out earlier, blue is a recessional colour which means flowers in blue can disappear in bouquets or leave "holes" visually particularly in larger arrangements such as venues and churches as blue doesn't reflect light.

Paler blues are probably better than the darker blues which have the purple hues. Delphinium is pretty as each flower head can be individually wired and used in bouquets and the whole flower, because they are such striking long stems, are very dramatic in church and venue arrangements.

Muscari or Grape Hyacinth is a blue colour & mixedwith Lily of the Valley looks gorgeous together. Also as Lisalou had Hydrangeas.
