Flowers for the guests

Pinki Hels, 15 February, 2011 at 08:54 Posted on Planning 0 8

What is everyone doing in relation to buttonhole flower for their day time guests that are attending the service?

I was thinking of just having them for the people who have a role within the wedding - i.e dads, best man, usher.

I have about 100 guests coming in the day so think that it will cost a lot to have everyone with buttonholes

Should evertone have flowers?

We've budgeted to have the whole wedding party plus aunties and uncles in buttonholes - works out at about 30 people for us.

Now we are considering whether we really want that or whether we'd rather have just the wedding party, to make them stand out more.

    At £5 a buttonhole it's a large cost.

Traditionally it is just the main wedding party ie the Groom, Best Man, FOTB,FOTG,Ushers & corsages for MOTB,MOTG & grans & Grandads.

It is entirely up to you but if you wanted to give alll the guests buttonholes then carnations are the cheapest option.

    Hi There,

I think this comes from way way back! I had a bride last year who sat making button holes for all the guests on the eve of her wedding!

240 of them! I think that is was an age old tradition, but as I say I have ever only had the one bride do this!

Totally agree! I've seen SO many buttonholes left to waste over the years - men don't like wearing them full stop and women who do like to wear one prefer to choose their own to match their outfit rather than have one made on their behalf. Guests really don't expect it these days and unless you have very diligent ushers handing one to each and every guest as they arrive, many will be left untouched. If budget permits, then it's a personal choice really, but not essential. The only people who traditionally have them are the principal guests and corsages for the ladies as Sherrie says.

I agree. Some of your guests will wear their own (when we go to a family/family friend wedding, all the men in OH's family wear them as FSIL is a florist - the girls have lovely hair pieces or wrist corsages).

Over the past 5 years, I think I've been to about 25 weddings. Not one of them has provided buttonholes for the guests.

I don't think I would expect to get one as a guest these days

I never even knew you were supposed to give them to guests too - I've only ever seen them given to the bridal party and perhaps key family members who aren't 'officially' involved

I wouldnt be getting them for all the guests - as its is were having to get 10 button holes, my bouquet, my 3 BMs bouquets, my flowergirls wire heart bag decorated plus whatever my mum gets...

As a guest at a wedding I usually sort myself out with a wrist corsage & OH with a button hole - it depends on how close you are to the couple though I think?

IE at my cousins wedding (the day before my friends) I had a wrist corsage & felt 'appropriate' with it - for my friends I got another & felt a wee bit OTT - not many guests had bothered. Its just something my mother has installed in me!
