FOOD - Help please!

RomanticGreenConfetti652, 30 September, 2016 at 22:00 Posted on Planning 0 7

My partner and I are having a late afternoon service with just family and very close friends. We have already decided on having hot carvery rolls and chips for our evening buffet but we are stuck on what to do for the guests we have during the day? We are having the late service as want an informal day and want to try and avoid the whole 3-course sit down style. We know they will probably need something to 'keep them going' until night time, so thought of a cold buffet with the usual sandwiches, quiche etc for them to go back and have while we were getting pictures taken and before we make it to the reception venue. Do you think this would be ok or does anyone have any other suggestions? TIA x

Would it be in your budget to get a food truck to stop by? Not necessarily a burger van/fast food ones, the kind of small one that goes to factories at lunch. Like I have a pasty van stop at lunch at my work, and has a little sticker saying for hire for weddings!

Or a basic afternoon tea? So scones + cream & jam for people who like sweet and cheese scones + butter/pickle for those who like savoury. I find scones really hefty and filling so would deffo tide me over till dinner!

The food truck sounds a great idea! Otherwise what about some substantial canapes? We have had work events in the past with 'bowl food' with mini sausages and mash, chicken curry or chilli and rice. Wouldn't be a large portion and people can eat them standing around or sat at casual tables...

What about a little lunchbox for each guest if the budget allows. Could double up with favours etc. I've got a Macdonalds happy meal style box in my head for some reason. Can be filled with as little or as much as you like.

A cold buffet would work or even plenty of canapes. It probably depends on how long it is from arriving for the ceremony until the carvery rolls as to how much people will need to eat.

How late is late afternoon? If they will have to be leaving to get to your venue around lunchtime I think you'd need to feed them something fairly substantial, as hot rolls and chips in the evening isn't very large and filling anyway, but if they can have lunch at home first you'd get away with canepe's, or an afternoon tea. If people will be having a few drinks throughout the day best to make sure they're not hungry!

We are having hte ceremony at 1430 followed by speeches, toasts and canapes. Evening do starts at 1900 and the hot buffet will be served at 1930 for all guests.I reckon they've plenty of time to get lunch themselves. To handle the late night munchies we are having a pork pie cake to be served at 2100 ish. We've effectively skipped the 3 course sit down in favour of an earlier buffet but i think it will work.

I have the same sort of format day in mind but thinking about going to a pub for a meal in between the ceremony and the evening reception so we will have a bit of a sit down but hopefully people can have what they want and me and the OH will have had a good feed before the drinking starts! I think a cold buffet sounds ideal if you didn't want a proper meal. Let me know how you get on with planning this as it sounds a lot like what we are planning.
