Food opinions needed

Lilacbouquet, 23 October, 2017 at 13:16 Posted on Planning 0 11

We have got to the 'confirm the buffet food' time, I am happy with the main course and dessert, then we are having a buffet late evening for the evening guests and top up for the all day people.

This is what we have chosen for the buffet, but before I confirm it could I have an opinion on it please, mainly the nibbles? Is is varied enough? Once we confirm we can't change it. I am happy with the patisserie bit and the sandwiches, but the nibbles I am not 100% sure.

Sounds good to me, a bit more "sophisticated" than I would go for though

Is this just for the evening buffet? This sounds like a huge amount of food! Do you really need all this. I've noticed that the more food is served in the evening, the less people dance so I've just gone for bacon sandwiches and cake!

I think you have a good selection of food that everyone should be able to find something they like.

I don't know the number of guest you are having or the quantities of food you plan to provide but i don't think you have too much, you have a good choice and I don't think it is too sophisticated (it is your wedding after all!).

Just to play devil's advocate, do you know if there are any vegans or people with dairy allergies at the wedding? if so there is not a lot they will be able to eat as there is cheese or other dairy in 13 of the 18 dishes.

Again to play devil's advocate, there is a lot of pork based dishes on the menu - Bacon sandwich, Honey roast Ham, Sausage rolls, toad in the hole... could you swap one of them ( i think i'd swap the honey roast ham) for another meat or fish as apart of chicken skewers and chicken sandwiches there is no other meat on the menu. My nephew is not a big eater of pork (he just don't like the taste and smell not due to religious reasons) so those things he wouldn't have for example, but you are providing plenty of others so it's good.

I once went to a wedding where the evening food was hog roast and a bun and that was it, no alternatives and no accompaniments such as condiments or salad/chips. It was fine for me but I did hear others comment (which was the only reason I noticed there was nothing to go with it!).

I always think if you can afford it, it is always best to give people a little choice. I always think it's best to have the same quantity and serve two varieties than have all of one.

You know your guest well and I'm assuming invites have already gone out and you know if there is any veggies or allergies etc. Just something to think about i guess.

If you know that these are things you and your guests would enjoy I would stick to it.

I'd be very happy to see that selection!

We have fish and chip cones included in our package and have contemplated adding some more food, but the wedding coordinator at the hotel said honestly, unless you have loads of extra evening guests, then don't bother. They advise catering for 80% of the guests, as a lot of people won't want anything just 2 hours after a 5 course dinner. Selection does look lovely though.

Sounds like a lovely selection, and if it's all part of your package then go for it but I do agree it's a lot of different dishes. Our evening food is included and it's just pick three out of seven options and we went for pizza, fish and chip cones, and falafel with pitta bread. I might have added a couple more if we could of (without having to pay a lot more) but I think that's sufficient for the evening food.

We have 2 vegan people coming but I have shown my friend this menu and she says there is plenty for her to eat there.

There is around 50 people for a 2 course dinner around 3.30-4pm, then around 10-15 extra for the evening for a buffet around 7.30-8pm. The hours arent set yet. The caterers say they provide for slightly less than one of everything per person as not everyone eats everything.

Is it too much food? We have wedding cake too....

People will complain if there isn't enough but I don't really want food to go to wate either. Within laws I think it is 3 hours, so the caterers said they can doggy bag anything that is left before the cut off time.

I would take the caterers advise (within reason as I'm sure they want you to have bigger orders as it means more money for them!)

With your guest numbers, if it were me i would forget about the sultana scones all together and then you have two dessert options : Pavlovas and wedding cake. or if you have more than one flavour of cake then just go with cake.

I'd keep all the salads but not sure how they calculate just under one per person on that. I would probably say you wouldn't need enough of each salad to feed 65 people. I would say halve the quantities of each of the salad. (not sure if i am making my self clear - basically i would have enough of each to feed no more than 30 people if that makes sense).

I'd keep the sandwich selections and on the nibbles i'd choose between the sausage roll or the toad in the hole (not sure if you need both) and probably only have one of the Quiches probably the leek one.

I think as you are having 2 courses at the wedding breakfast it wont be too much food, however, if the wedding breakfast doesn't starts till 3.30/4pm it won't be finished till about 4.30/5.30 I would think and therefore that only leaves a two hour gap till 7.30, not sure if everyone would be hungry so soon? Could you push it back to 8.30 for evening food? give people more time to digest maybe? or is that to late? Again i would take advise from your venue as they will know what the norm is for timings.

For 65 people I really don't think you need 4 salad options for example and definitely not 3 patisserie options as well as wedding cake, in fact I wouldn't have any patisserie items as it may detract from your wedding cake.

I think if it were me I would definitely get rid of the sultana scones. so you have two dessert options: pavlova and cake. but if you have more than one flavour of cake i would just have that and not bother with the pavlova either.

I don't think you need enough of all 4 salads to feed 65 people each. I would halve or even quarter the quantities so combined there is enough to feed 65 people.

I would keep the sandwich selection.

I don't think you have too much food but if you are concerned that there is too much then i would probably get rid of either the sausage rolls or the toad in the hole (not sure if you need both) and probably just keep one type of quiche (probably the leek one).

Hmm okay, maybe we should narrow it down a bit to:

    2x sandwiches, maybe 4 or 5 nibbles instead of 8, 2 x salads?

Trying to leave some vegetarian and gluten free options, does this sound any better or still too much?
