Food question

pandorasbox, 1 June, 2011 at 16:00 Posted on Planning 0 10

Thinking about it now, what we currently have planned will be too much food with canapes as well as main meal and bbq buffet, but OH pointed out lots of people will have travelled and may have had a very early lunch or none at all so welcome canapes are a good idea. I have just been reading someone else's post about too much food, and wondered what everyone thought about our plans:

2.30 ceremony ends, guests have their welcome drink and some canapes.

4.30 guests are seated for wedding breakfast. 60 people having a 3 course meal.

7-7.30pm evening guests arrive

9-9.30pm BBQd burgers and sausage baps are ready. Catering for 60% of guests for this. 120 wedding cupcakes also available for people to have!!!

The other idea is to serve the canapes and welcome drink as guests arrive before the ceremony at 2pm, but this seems a bit odd to me - I don't want people feeling rushed to finish drinks and hurry into the ceremony room.

What are your opinions? Ditch the canapes, serve them earlier, or leave as it is? It is only £2 per head, but that could easily cover the cost of the welcome drinks and save us a tiny bit of money... but in OH's view it is better to have too much than not enough, imo it is better not to waste food and money!

We have almost the same set up, but without the canapes. Personally i dont think they are necessary and as you have said it could be money spent elsewhere.

I'd ditch the canapes - people do eat before if they think they'll get hungry and it's not that long to wait for their meal. Ceremony is late enough to have a quick lunch before most people leave - save your money or splurge it on something else

We have same - 3 course meal and evening BBQ - we did debate the canapes and to be honest if I could afford them I would have them. They are only a couple of bites so not going to fill any one up I just think there a nice touch - People are always starving at weddings by the time dinner comes which is a good thing I suppose. Defo not to much food I don't think!

Maybe I'm greedy but if I'd travelled far and had no/little lunch canapes would be a lifesaver rather than waiting 'til 4.30. Also two hours is a fair gap...I don't think it'll put people off dinner.

I think it's a nice touch and I'd be impressed if there were nice canapes on top of a wedding breakfast!

Dudes, I love canapes and any mini food. They're a nice touch and will be appreciated. Don't break the bank with them but I'm sure they'll be appreciated.

We didn't have any canapes. After the ceremony we served drinks but no food. We then had a three course meal followed by a buffet later on in the evening.

If you're worried about people going hungry then leave them in but if not, I really wouldn't worry too much.

    Hi

in my own opinion id stick with the canapes as they are a very nice touch, they dont fill you up, and are very needed after the travelling and ceremony. If you are a little worried about it being too much, have you thought of doing just 2 courses for your sit down meal, maybe leave the starter?????? this way you dont give people too much, but you ensure they are eating little and often which is better.

Hope this gives you food for thought. xx

Thats exactly my timing but we are definately having canapes, i don't think its too much at all, canapes just keep you going and lines the stomach for the start of the alcohol, plus its a very nice touch for the guests!

Thanks all, I think votes for canapes is more than votes against. Plus OH really wants them so I suppose I should let him have something. I will force feed any buffet leftovers to our guests if I have to avoid waste!

We're having some nibbles but couldnt afford 'proper' canapes so caterer suggested having home-made cheese straws, sweet shortbread, mini scones with jam and cream, bowls of strawberries and bowls of mixed olives, with pink fizz, pimms, and strawberry & Elderflower cordial for the kiddies.

    Followed by three course lunch.

Followed by a cheese board buffet of three large cheeses, fruit, chutney, biscuits. ALong with the wedding cake/cup cakes and also mixed salads. We couldnt afford a proper evening buffet and our evenign guests arent arriving until 8pm so should've eaten by then I am hoping!
