Foodies: range style cooker help please

Popcorn1, 29 August, 2008 at 20:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I'm currently in the throes of planning my new kitchen. Although I've been waiting for this for 5 years, I'm actually finding it quite stressful now I need to make some decisions. I really want to get it right!

I'm after a range style cooker and had thought I'd go for an Aga S-Series 6-4. But now I'm having to make the decision I'm wondering if it's the right choice. Does anyone know if it is a technically decent cooker or if one is basically paying the Aga styling (which admittedly I do like but it's not the be all and end all)? I have also had Falcon and Britannia recommended to me. Does anyone have any experience to share or other recommendations? I'd be after 6 gas rings, at least 2 ovens and a grill.

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.

    We've got a Stoves range - 7 burners, 2 big ovens, 1 small oven/grill and a warming/proving oven. It rocks. Dual fuel.

My best advice? Buy the larger one (1200mm IIRC) as otherwise your ovens will be too small to take your old trays. I wish I'd realised this, but TBH, buying new baking trays was the end of the world.

We've got a Belling range and find it to be very good, also heard good things about Rangemaster though I understand they can be pricey.

Aga's are fantastic I understand (my boss has one and swears by it). I think you need to have a good look and poke about with them before you put your order in, the oven is a huge part of the kitchen and it's important to get the right one for you and your lifestyle.

New kitchen sounds like fun though!

*Edited to add that ours is duel fuel = gas hobs and electric ovens, one fan, one conventional, grill and storage for your trays etc.

We also had a stoves dual fuel range. 7 rings as far as I recall including a wok burner. We loved it ,although I do seem to recall there was a bit of an anti stoves movement on hitched at one point.

We've got a Smeg A1 Opera and I love it.

Possibly not the style your after, and only one oven - albeit one that can easily fit 4 roasting tins in.

Had some trouble with the door seal breaking but Smeg were very good - sending someone out to replace for free and has been fine since.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

I have the model down from this - the one without the warming drawer (is it wrong to covet a warming drawer?!) in cream - it's great, no complaints at all and a very un-Aga like price!

I don't have one but have looked at some because I want one in the near future. All I would say is make sure that both ovens are of a decent size. On some models, the smaller oven isn't even big enough to take a baking tray so not much use other than a plate warmer!

Many thanks for all your comments. Gosh, I don't know what to do! There is so much variety and such a price-range I can't really decide what to do. I'm know wondering whether to go or a "proper" range but I'll start a different thread about that.

We inherited an old Rangemaster (gas only) with our house and it was brilliant. 110cm wide meant large enough ovens for massive turkeys at Xmas and standard size baking trays. Also grew to love the gas ovens, which I found gave much better results than electric (and barely any pre-heating). Had 2 gas ovens, gas grill, 4 burners, griddle and warming plate. They have expanded their range over the past couple of years and have some great contemporary designs now. http://www.rangemaster.co.uk/index_65.htm

Another vote for Smeg here - our 6-ring dual-fuel one is awesome. We only have a single oven, because when we looked at it, the seperate ovens were quite small. This way we can get 2 pizzas in side by side! ? Seriously though, we've had no problems with it, it's a great piece of kit.

We have a smeg one too. 4 rings, one huge burner and one long burner for fish kettles, so 6 in total. one oven only, but its enormous, double width.

I'm another with a rangemaster but only a 90...this was just a space thing, i would have had the 1100 if i'd had the room. it has 5 rings, a large and a smaller side oven, and a grill. its a dual fuel

however the small oven is the one i use most of the time...i only tend to the large one for the xmas turkey, other large roasts or pizzas. according to the blurb you can roast 4 chickens in the small oven. (should you want to)

having said all that i do love stoves ovens though, but their range didn't include a 90 when i got mine
