For those doing DIY makeup (or if you just like makeup in general!!)...

MrsB-to-be, 13 February, 2013 at 20:21 Posted on Planning 0 12

I'm sure lots of you know this already, but for those who don't, I thought I'd share.

I popped into Debenhams today to the Estee Lauder counter to have a look for some makeup as I'm doing my own for the wedding. The lady on the counter was super helpful and gave me tonnes of advice. She also did my foundation and blusher etc for me and gave me a 10 day sample of foundation to see how I got on with it at home Smiley smile. She also said I could go back any time if I wanted her to help me with some ideas for eye makeup... all no obligation.

Really, really excellent customer service... just thought I'd share!

PS: 7.5 hours later and my foundation still looks perfect... despite walking back form work in the rain!!

xx

Ooh fab! I've decided to use the money I would have paid a MUA to buy some new fresh make up to do my own. I usually use MAC but I wanted something a bit more 'bridal' and I automatically thought if Estée Lauder so I'm really pleased you posted this, it has decided It for me that I'll give them a try! Thanks for the useful advice xx

Smiley smile I went to Mac today too, but they weren't really willing to help unless I paid £50 for a tutorial... I've never used their products but this Estee Lauder foundaiton is awesome. The girl advised me that the 'Double Wear Light' foundation is really good for weddings as it has a slightly dewy finish but very good coverage, and looks less flat on wedding photos in comparison to the completely matt foundations Smiley smile xx

I find mac foundation really heavy so probably wouldn't want to wear that all day, I'll write that down about the EL foundation and try it out! I'm really worried about doing my own makeup even though I've done it myself all of my make up wearing years and it looks fine, I'll ask for some tips from the nice Estée Lauder lady ( hoping she's nice in the Newcastle debenhams!) xx

    Hi,

Estee Lauder foundations are lovely but be careful if you have dry skin as the Double Wear foundation is best for oily skin and so can dry your skin out. Clinique do lovely foundations they give good coverage and feel light on your skin and last all day.

To help your foundation last all day put a primer on underneath your foundation.

Thanks for your advice Aimee, I have quite oily skin but its dry as a bone at the minute ( maybe central heating and cold weather) what primer would you recommend? My sister uses mac prep and prime but I've also heard smash box is good xx

For oily skin I would use YSL Matt Touch primer, normal skin Laura Mercier primer. Dry skin Laura Mercier Hydrating primer.

You would need to use the primer over moisturiser and before foundation. If during the day your skin goes shiney you would need to use a mattifying primer as you have oily skin. If during the day your skin feels dry and tight and goes flakey you have dry skin and so use a hydrating primer. If neither then a primer for normal skin. Or a combination of primer for different areas of the face.

Just to butt in on this thread; this is SUCH useful stuff! I can't afford a MUA so my sister is doing it for me. I usually use Clinique stay matte foundation (I have combination / oily skin) but I like the sound of the Estee Lauder stuff. I've never been to a make up counter before! What do you do? Just express an interest in some of the products and hope they offer you a trial??

I've heard that EL Double Wear Fondation is not good because it 'ghosts out' in photos? Maybe a MUA can give some advice on this. Not sure if that's the same for the light version.

Just ask for one. Be honest and say that you're a bride who will be doing your own make up and are looking for the right products - you're giving them an opportunity to sell which they won't turn down.

If you can make a purchase do, but don't feel too obliged if there isn't anything you like. Think of them as test drives :o)

It's titanium dioxide that causes the ghosting effect in photos. You want to look for a foundation that has it low down on the ingredients list.

Estee Lauder double wear is ok, I used it on my wedding day and it was fine. I use Clinique foundations on my brides and they are fine too.

When going to a counter for makeup just ask for them to show you the products and to try some out. Remember when checking if the foundation is the correct colour you need to go to natural light and look at your jawline to see if the foundation disappears, then it's the correct colour.

Also I don't think one brand is good for all makeup products. I use a range of brands as they are all good for different things.
