For those of you who know lots about dogs....Recommend me a dog breed

1234ABC, 16 May, 2012 at 15:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 32

A colleague in work is thinking about getting a dog, but would like something relatively low maintenace, or low energy dog.

What would you suggest is the best breed for her?

Any help would be great!

Low energy and low maintenance? A cat breed.

I definitely wouldn't recommend a puppy! They are neither low maintenance nor low energy (but oh so worth it!!).

Most dogs will need something to keep them occupied, would they leave the dog alone during the day? Do they have space for it to run about (either inside or outside)?

If they might struggle to spend quite a bit of time with their pet or wouldn't be able to walk/play/take it training or classes regularly then maybe a cat would be more suitable?

Colleague works all day, but there is usually someone about. She has plenty of space for one, i think she's looking for something that doesn't need walked a million miles every day.

FTLOMB - I suggested a cat to her, but she said Dog!

I may get corrected on this but I heard retired/rescue greyhounds etc make amazing low maintenance dogs.

As I say, could be wrong but sure I heard that somewhere.

A cross breed is definatley less likely to have congenital problems and are usually healthier overall something with poodle in it wouldn't shed hair but all dogs need walking whether energetic or not.

I dont have a basset but my boy is extremely vocal. He very rarely barks but 'talks' all the time. So adorable.

I meant more "talking" noises than actual barking ? It's so lovely when they do that kind of whimper/chatty sounds. Sorry, can't explain it very well...

Of course I am going to suggest a Shihtzu, they are very low maintenance, I walk Ray 20 mins a day, that's it, they don't shed at all which is funny because they're little furballs! So you don't have to constantly hoover and mop your floors for fear of hair settling down. My H has allergies too and he's been fine with Ray.

This is so true. Our dog Elsie is the most laid back, dopey dog that I have ever met. She is an ex-racer greyhound, you wouldn't believe she ever had the energy.

People think that because they are ex racers that they need lots of exercise but they are built for speed not distance. Take Elsie out for 15 minutes and she will sleep for 4 hours after. they do love the occasional free run. it's realy funny beacuse if you let them out in a normal size garden they will run around in a circle and it's always clockwise just like at the race track.

    chilling as usual

Same with Shea - especially if you stop rubbing his tummy when he's falling asleep on the floor next to you - he grumbles like a bear ?

I have a pug - she doesn't take much walking (about 30 minutes a day); she does need her face wiped every few days as her nose is flat so it can get bits stuck in the fold above it... but she's not really high maintenance. She is very chilled, so she is happy to be left alone and doesn't fret.

I have heard pugs are good if you don't have time for long walks. I imagine dashunds (sausage dogs) are similar as they have such little legs! The sausage dogs i met at dog training were always quite chilled and refined. Very expensive breed tho. Gurzle - will you please flash your lovely little pug? I am getting a pug cross in a month, reserved a few weeks ago and I have pug fever! x x

Aww, she looks like my greyhound, Tally. I agree that greyhounds are the most laid back dogs. I take Tally for a 10 min run in the field in the morning then she walks to and from work with me (10 mins each way) and that is plenty of exercise for her. She spends most of her days sleeping, unless there's someone around to tickle her tummy.
